Netflix fans furious as 'beautiful and imaginative' sci-fi series axed after just one season

A critically acclaimed animated science fiction series sadly won’t be picked up for a second season by Netflix

Netflix subscribers have been left disappointed after yet another series comes to an end after just one season.

It follows a slew of cancellations from the streamer this year which have angered subscribers, such as the seemingly popular fantasy dramas Kaos and Dead Boy Detectives.

Scavengers Reign first premiered on HBO’s streaming service Max back in October 2023, where it received critical acclaim before it drew wider appeal with its release on Netflix in May this year.

It follows a group of space explorers who are stranded on an alien planet filled with awe-inspiring nature and hostile creatures.

Unfortunately, its viewership was not strong enough to warrant a second season on either platform, despite scoring a coveted 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Creator Joe Bennett confirmed the disappointing update, alongside a teaser trailer for what was to come in a second season, in an Instagram post, which sparked a furious response from the show’s devotees.

“You are KIDDING ME?!” one viewer exclaimed in the comments.

“SR was the most beautiful and interesting thing on TV since maybe ever! It blows my mind that it wasn’t immediately given several more seasons.”

“No season 2 of this yet [they’re] wanting a 5th season of Emily in Paris,” another nonplussed fan replied, before asking, “You got a Patreon?”

Someone else replied: “This is such a waste, when profit plays against quality shows like this one.

“This is so important for me, I've never seen anything like it and we need more of it.”

Bennett’s announcement also ignited backlash against Netflix when it was posted on Reddit, with one user saying, “It’s really heartbreaking that such a uniquely beautiful show might not find a new home for season 2.”

“Too bad. One of the most imaginative - and horrifying - animated shows I had seen in years,” someone else remarked.

And a final fan lamented: “Life is unfair. Maybe my favourite season of television ever. Just a wonder.”

Other fans have called for rival streaming services like Apple TV+ to acquire a second season, or considered the possibility of a crowdfunded release on YouTube.

The creator’s statement may give fans some optimism that a continuation of the Scavengers Reign saga could eventually happen.

“We’ve had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season last year,” he wrote.

He then assured viewers: “But this is not the end. There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season, and we produced in-house at Green Street a teaser for what was going to come in the second season.

“Thanks again to everyone who watched and supported the show.”

Scavengers Reign is available to stream on Max in the US and Netflix in the UK.
