Victoria Derbyshire talks having a baby in her 50s as she recalls devastating miscarriage
by Samantha Masters · Manchester Evening NewsVictoria Derbyshire has revealed she would love to have another baby with her husband Mark Sandell as she discussed the ups and downs of motherhood. The Newsnight presenter, who has two sons Ollie, 20, and Joe, 17, reminisced about the feeling of having a newborn and insisted the feelings of broodiness hadn't left her.
"I feel like, obviously I can't now, I'm in my 50s and I haven't had a period since chemotherapy, [but] I feel like I could have a baby now, isn't that mad? I love being the mum of a newborn," she disclosed. The 56-year-old broadcaster delved into memories of conceiving and raising her sons, including a poignant memory of her first son's birth following a devastating miscarriage.
Victoria admits she still ponders over what might have been over 20 years later, but has found solace in conversations with her sons about the loss. She revealed: "My boys know that I had that miscarriage and they fondly think, oh, what if it had been a sister? What if that, you know, what would have you have called her? They would've liked a sister."
Remembering the ordeal happening while on a plane, Victoria added of her reaction: "I was just so sort of practical and pragmatic, it was like, well, this is happening now, and I'm going to work and I just sort of carried on."

The journalist said looking back, it's likely that she didn't give herself enough time to process her grief, as she preferred to keep busy. However, she has found discussing it with her sons "cathartic". On whether she was apprehensive about her pregnancies that followed, the journalist said she was just happy to be pregnant again.
"I was happy to go through the pregnancy, happy to eat loads of food and you know, put loads of weight on. I loved it, I loved it, yeah," she added on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast.
After a long-standing relationship of 17 years, Victoria married Mark in 2018 and it was their sons who walked her down the aisle. She enthusiastically recounted how wonderful the experience was and recommended those who were keen on marriage before children to consider the opposite.
"It was stunning," she said. "And if I can recommend having your own children at your wedding, I really mean that, they loved it. They took so much from it. They were a part of Mark's groom speech, it was just amazing."
