"It's like they're in bed with me!": Booming roadworks keep residents awake in 'nights of hell'

by · Manchester Evening News

A woman has said roadworks booming directly outside her bedroom window have been keeping her up 'all night' and are affecting her mental health.

The resurfacing works to Kingsway, in Stretford, were scheduled to take place overnight between the hours of 10.30pm and 6.30am, from September 30 to October 5.

But one resident, who lives in an apartment block on Kingsway, says she has had to endure 'three nights of no sleep' after workmen and heavy machinery wreak havoc on her and neighbours.

The developments form as part of the ongoing roadworks to Kingsway in Stretford, near to Stretford Mall, and its junctions with Barton Road and the A56 Chester Road.

The works have so far been carried out for more than 12 months and are said to be nearing completion. Trafford Council has apologised to motorists and those living in the area, but insisted it will 'transform the town centre into a place that better meets the needs of local residents and businesses'.

The council later announced on social media that between September 30 and October 5, five nights of resurfacing work would be carried out between the hours of 10.30pm and 6.30am, with Kingsway closed off to traffic.

But one furious woman, who suffers from bipolar and anxiety, has said the constant noise has resulted in 'three nights of hell' and slammed the council for the decision, claiming she also wasn't informed as she doesn't use social media.

"When it first started, I knew nothing about it. I was in bed and heard all this noise and thought it was a bomb or something," she said.

"I shot up straight away and saw all these flashing lights and the smell of engines burning. I was beside myself. I never knew it would be happening all night and right outside my window.

"People have to get up early in the morning to work. Once they start, there's no way you can get a good sleep. I'm going into the fourth day now and am falling asleep at my desk at work. It's so loud it feels like they're in bed with me. I am up all night.

"I know that everytime it gets to 10.30, I'm anxious knowing it's yet another night of no sleep. Trafford Council has not done anything to ensure the mental wellbeing of the residents."

It comes just two days after the Manchester Evening News reported how delays and diversions have become a 'nightmare' for motorists and householders in the area.

The roadworks have led to long delays for shoppers leaving the Stretford Mall car park as well as people stuck waiting at the temporary traffic lights - with some residents even threatening to move out of the area.

In a post on social media, Trafford Council apologised for inconvenience caused by the recent overnight works. They wrote: "Five nights of resurfacing work will take place between 10.30pm and 6.30am, starting Monday 30 September. During this time, Kingsway and its junction with Barton Road/Urmston Lane will be closed to traffic.

"Diversion routes will be clearly marked to guide you through the area, and the overnight works are expected to wrap up by Saturday 5 October. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience through this complex set of improvement works."

And previously, a council spokesperson added: "The public realm Improvement works to Kingsway and the Barton Road junction are due to be completed in the next few weeks. These works will make this part of Stretford greener and safer for pedestrians by replacing the barrier lined dual carriageway that divided Stretford town centre from neighbouring residential areas.

“The council would like to recognise and apologise for the disruption caused during the highway improvement, safety and resurfacing work in and around Stretford town centre.

“The works will transform the town centre into a place that better meets the needs of local residents and businesses and includes new crossing points, bus stops, lighting, footpaths, seating, planting and trees. This new highway is being resurfaced during these final stages.

"To carry out the work, there will be some overnight road closures for five nights starting from (today) September 30. We are also working to provide permanent cycle lanes on Chester Road to provide safer travel active travel routes along the busy A56.”

Trafford Council has been contacted for further comment.
