Dr Punam Krishan has told how she's had an 'emotional' week in training for Strictly Come Dancing as she confirmed a major 'first'. The practising GP has got her journey in the BBC One dance contest off to a solid start with professional dance partner Gorka Marquez.

The pair have this week been in training for week three of this year's competition on Saturday (October 5), which just so happens to be the Movie Week special.

It's been revealed that Punam and Gorka will be part of a 'first' for the hit dance show, during its 20th anniversary year as they'll be performing a Couple’s Choice Bollywood number to Bole Chudiyan from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

First revealing the news by resharing Strictly's social media post with all the couple's songs and dances for week three, Punam said on her Instagram Story: "This week's dance revealed... First time ever on @bbcstrictly - I'm doing Bollywood and I can't tell you how special this feels."

Then on Thursday (October 3), Punam caught up with her online followers in an Instagram Q&A and shared how she's feeling about the upcoming show. She said: "I am so excited about Movie Week. The film that we're doing is Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham which us a huge, iconic Bollywood film.

"Think Love Actually... I think it's on par with Love Actually for Bollywood. It has all the most incredible actors and actresses in there, the songs, the music, the story, the cheese, the drama, the love, all of it! And we're getting to enact one of the most famous Bollywood songs. It's super fun, there's lots of play. I'm feeling really excited about this."

And she also told how much it means to her. The Morning Live resident GP said: ""It means so, so much. My mum and dad are from the north of India from Punjab so I've grown up with Bollywood and Bhangra music all my life. and I think that I have the privilege to navigate two cultures, the Scottish and all of its colours and also my Indian heritage means the world to me.

"I never in a million years growing up would have imagined seeing traditional Bollywood on - I'm going to say 'normal telly' because my mum and dad used to watch lots of Indian TV programmes when we were little - so this week has felt really emotional. My mum's been quite emotional about it. She's so, so proud, my granny in India is so proud.

"Just as a family, it's special. You can't be what you can't see and certainly, I couldn't see this as a little kid. So I'm just hoping that even my own children watching will be proud to see their heritage and Bollywood just being given a special place on a platform like Strictly."
