Tom Jones admits brutal first impression of The Voice co-star after backlash from viewers

Sir Tom Jones shared a brutally honest three-word first impression of a former co-star, who faced backlash from some viewers due to his "low profile" in comparison to his fellow coaches.

In 'Over the Top and Back', published in 2016, the singer discusses the original series of The Voice UK, which featured four coaches: himself, Jessie J, will.i. am from Black Eyed Peas, and Danny O'Donoghue from The Script.

He recalled a time before the show's launch when the four hadn't met, and BBC producers had arranged a dinner at Soho House in London. The legendary Welsh performer revealed that they later attended a press launch.

The 'Green Green Grass of Home' crooner admitted that although he recognised Jessie J, who had hits such as 'Price Tag' and 'Flashlight', and will.i.am as "huge pop stars", he said The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue was more of an "unknown".

Tom wrote: "Later, there's a press launch for the first series at a hotel in London. Will and Jessie are huge pop stars at this point.

"Danny's the unknown Irish guy. And me...well, I'm Nelson's Column, or something. A monument of some kind. I haven't quite worked it out yet."

The 'It’s Not Unusual' singer went on to describe will.i. am as reminding him a "little of Wyclef Jean", being "bright" and "out there", with a "producer's approach".

Tom called Jessie J a "ballsy kid" who struck him as both "talented" and "driven", but "questions herself all the time". However, his comments about Danny were somewhat different.

He said: "And then there's Danny who, because he has the lowest profile of the four of us, will have to put up with being called Danny I Dunno Who when the series kicks off."

However, Tom also praised Danny, saying: "But he's smart and funny and properly knowledgeable about music."

Danny left The Voice after a two-year stint but continued to perform with his band, famous for hits like 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' and 'Breakeven'.

He once shared an anecdote about a lengthy champagne-drinking session with Sir Tom, admitting that he found it hard to keep pace.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Danny revealed that he and Tom were "probably there six hours or something from 12 o'clock to six in the morning".
