‘Twisters’ Includes Some References To The Original ‘Twister’

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters also stars Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane and David Corenswet.

Although there is no direct connection, story-wise, to 1996’s Twister—which stars Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton—Twisters does include some homages to the original film.

Daisy Edar-Jones told Variety before the release of Twisters, “It feels like a real next chapter, whilst also having so much love for the original. We have Dorothy [the weather sensor device from the first film]. We have moments and costumes that are mirrored from the original.”

In addition, Bill Paxton’s son, James Paxton, makes an appearance in Twisters as a tribute to his late father, who died in 2017 at age 61.

"It's really a cameo, so it's an Easter egg for the fans of Dad and the original," James Paxton told Entertainment Weekly before the release of the film. "I did this one for Dad."

In his scene—which also includes Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell—James Paxton appears as a disgruntled hotel guest.

“I wanted to be a conduit for his spirit there and cheer everyone in this production on to success because I know he would be,” James Paxton explained to EW. “I wanted to do something that really honors his presence in this new chapter and really do something for him.”

Rated PG-13, Twisters is currently available on digital streaming via premium video on demand and will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD this week.

Twisters makes it streaming video on demand debut on Peacock on November 15.
