We’re almost to the weekend, ladies and gentlemen. It’s the last weekend of September. Soon, Halloween season will be upon us—though around my house that’s already begun. My 17-year-old was eager to get the decorations up inside and out, and I stalled for a few weeks but the time has come and our yard is now much spookier. We’re going all out this year.

In any case, despite it feeling like summer today we’re very much in autumn and that means cool evenings that are perfect for lazy strolls, followed by a nice visit to the couch and all the great new shows and movies that are out on streaming lately. There are a ton of them!

Each week I scour the internet for new shows and movies to recommend—or warn you off of—and unlike a lot of streaming guides, I pepper mine with commentary. I also try to include review scores and other helpful information so you know what you’re getting into rather than going in blind. Of course, there’s no accounting for taste. As LeVar Burton says, “You don’t have to take my word for it!”

New Shows And Movies

Daryl Dixon Season 2 — The Book Of Carol (AMC)

Norman Reedus reunites with Melissa McBride in the second season of Daryl Dixon, goofily named ‘The Book Of Carol’. I had mixed feelings about the first season of this Walking Dead spinoff. The production values were terrific, but the story was a mess. And while the French setting was certainly fun, the implausibility of it all was hard to get past. Still, I’m always rooting for The Walking Dead and I hope Season 2 is a big improvement over Season 1.

Wolfs (Apple TV+)

George Clooney and Brad Pitt star in this Apple TV+ movie about a professional fixer (Clooney) hired to cover up a high-profile crime. Pitt plays a second fixer, and the two are forced to work together as things go badly. The pun in the title is clever. Both men are “lone wolves” but the plural makes no sense when talking about a “lone wolf” — hence Wolfs. This has done okay with critics (71%) and audiences (65%) on Rotten Tomatoes. I have yet to see it, but it’s out now on Apple TV.

Will & Harper (Netflix)

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele go on a roadtrip after Steele comes out as a transwoman on a 16-day journey from New York to Los Angeles. Steele and Ferrell became friends on the set of SNL where Ferrell starred and Steele worked in the writing room. I haven’t seen this one yet, either, but it’s faring quite well on Rotten Tomatoes with a 99% critic score and 78% audience score.

Apartment 7A (Paramount+)

Julia Garner stars in this prequel to the classic horror film Rosemary’s Baby, and unfortunately critics are not impressed calling the film a predictable retread rather than an illuminating prequel. Still, for fans of the original this might be an interesting return to one of cinema’s creepiest and most disturbing entries.

Colin From Accounts Season 2 Premiere (Paramount+)

Real-life husband and wife Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer star as Gordon and Ashley in this Australian dramedy which they also create and direct. The series is a Paramount+ hit with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and a passionate following. All episodes of Season 2 are streaming now.

Paddington 2 (Prime Video)

One of the best films ever made is now available on Amazon Prime Video. Paddington 2 is simply delightful in every way, one of those rare sequels that far surpasses the original. There’s a third film on the way, but even if it’s great I can’t imagine it will top this masterpiece. In The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, Pedro Pascal’s character tells Nick Cage that it’s his favorite movie of all time, which Cage initially thinks is silly. Later, they watch it together and both men are bawling and remarking at how amazing it is. This is truth. If you haven’t seen it, please do.

The Wild Robot (In Theaters)

The movie I’m most interested in seeing in theaters right now is The Wild Robot, based on the book of the same name by Peter Brown. I’m hoping to get to this one this weekend, though I may have to wait until the coming week. I won’t lie, I get a little emotional just watching the trailer. A 98% on Rotten Tomatoes gives me hope that the movie will be as good as it looks. Maybe this will just be a great year for animated family movies. Inside Out 2 sure was a banger! (It’s available now on Disney+ by the way).

Ongoing Shows

There are so many shows—good and bad—streaming right now it’s honestly hard to keep up. I haven’t been able to recap all of them, but I’m trying. I’ll offer up thoughts on each of the ones I’m following at the moment below.

Agatha All Along (Disney+)

Agatha All Along is a sequel to Disney and Marvel’s excellent WandaVision and after three episodes I can safely say that it’s actually really good. The first episode is still my favorite, but the third—which aired earlier this week—was a lot of fun. I described it as The Goonies but with middle-aged women. Kathryn Hahn is wonderful as the witch Agatha Harkness, but the rest of the supporting cast does a great job as well. The story follows Agatha and her newly-formed coven on a quest to regain their powers. So far, it’s a nice mix of comedy, horror and adventure. I hope it keeps up the momentum for the rest of the season. New episodes air Wednesdays. Read my review of Episode 3 here.

The Penguin (HBO / Max)

I’m super excited for the second episode of HBO’s The Penguin. Colin Farrell is so damn good as Oz Cobb, a mid-tier mobster in Gotham’s seedy underworld. As far as I can tell, this is Oz’s origin story. He’s not the titular mobster yet, but I suspect we’ll see his rise to power as the season unfolds. I’ve heard some viewers complain that he doesn’t have all the trademark Penguin things yet, but I think we’ll see him come into his own as the season unfolds. He already has the plum Maserati. All he needs is the cane, the purple suit, the name. This is definitely more gangster flick than Batman story, but who knows where it will go? New episodes air Sundays. You can read my review of the season premiere here.

FROM Season 3 (MGM+)

I’m so happy FROM is back, though I wish it was on Prime Video rather than tucked away on MGM+. Still, the Lost successor is back on track for Season 3 with a brutal first episode that had me truly chilled by the end. The show’s story follows a group of people stuck in a paranormal town where creepy monsters come out at night, and other even more terrifying things haunt and hunt our heroes. Things are changing for the worse in Fromville. Hopefully we get some narrative progress—and have some questions answered—before the season wraps. New episodes air Sunday. Read my review of Episode 1 right here.

Slow Horses Season 4 (Apple TV+)

I’m really enjoying Season 4 of Slow Horses so far. We’re four episodes in and the new season is already better than Season 3 (which wasn’t bad, just my least favorite of the four so far). The British spy series follows the misfits as Slough House, a halfway house for MI5 agents who screwed up in some way or another and have been put into a kind of probation. Gary Oldman plays the disgusting but brilliant Jackson Lamb, Slough House’s flatulent patriarch. Jack Lowden plays young River Cartwright, a spy who clearly doesn’t belong with the misfits. Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce and plenty of other talented actors also star. This season, Hugo Weaving plays the mysterious villain, Frank Harkness (no relation to Agatha). It’s great. One of the best shows on TV. New episodes air Wednesdays. Read my Season 4 premiere review here.

Only Murders In The Building Season 4 (Hulu)

I’m not quite prepared to say that Season 4 is the best season of Only Murders In The Building since the first, but so far it’s shaping up to be really great. Steve Martin plays retired C-list actor Charles-Haden Savage. Martin Short plays failed Broadway director Martin Short. And Selena Gomez plays “podcast producer” Mabel Mora. This season, the murder is more personal than ever, as the intrepid podcasting sleuths try to uncover who the killer is, why the victim was murdered, and whether or not the victim was actually the intended target. A colorful cast of supporting characters and guest stars has made this one of the liveliest, and most mysterious, entries in the Hulu comedy. New episodes air Tuesdays. You can read my review of the Season 4 premiere here.

Bad Monkey (Apple TV)

Bad Monkey is exactly the kind of light-hearted mystery-dramedy that we need more of—and I think “dramedy” is probably a stretch. It’s a comedy, but it has some dark moments and enough drama and mystery, I think, to earn it that portmanteau. Vince Vaughn stars as Andrew Yancy, wise-cracking sometimes-detective trying to bring down some very bad people. The show takes place mostly in the Florida Keys and is filled with lots of memorable, quirky characters and one very adorable monkey. Things are coming to a head as the show hurtles toward its finale. If you enjoy one-armed men, psychotic blonds (and brunettes, come to think of it) and the best narrator on TV, this is one you shouldn’t miss. Apple TV keeps knocking it out of the park lately.

The Rings Of Power (Prime Video)

The Rings Of Power is ostensibly a prequel series to The Lord Of The Rings, detailing the big events that took place in Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a messy fan-fiction that gets just about every detail wrong, but plenty of people seem to enjoy it. Even as generic fantasy, the series mostly fails, but I did have some nice things to say about the most recent episode. So that’s something. You can read my Episode 7 review right here. New episodes drop on Thursdays.

And that’s all folks. Let me know if I missed anything!
