Bristol walking tours to celebrate Black History Month

The tours explore the contributions made to Bristol by those of African heritage

Two walking tours exploring Bristol’s cultural diversity and heritage are set to start this week. Tour guide and professional storyteller //Kabbo Hue Qua Tura has been doing the tours for the last three years and is now doing four sessions to celebrate Black History Month.

The first entitled, 'Decolonising Bristol', will begin at Royal Fort Gardens at 11am on Friday, October 18 and 25. In this tour he will explore the history around buildings, people and places in and around Bristol University and the city centre.

The second tour, which focuses more on the history of St Pauls and surrounding neighbourhoods, is called 'Bristol's Cultural Quarter'. This tour will be held on Saturday, October 19 and 26, starting at 11am at the entrance of Hamilton House on Stokes Croft.

//Kabbo, who is originally from South Africa, told BristolLive that the tours also look at a variety of cultural contributions - from Asia to the old Anglo-Saxon and Roman cities which existed prior to modern day Bristol. He said: “My focus is not to go against anyone but is to give a more rounded perspective of the different cultural contributions that have made Bristol the beautiful multicultural city it is today.

"People are always grateful and surprised by the interlinked stories that can be found in Bristol. On Ashley Road, there were two skeletons found that are believed to have war wounds dating back to the English civil war."

//Kabbo hopes that his tours, like the Banksy Trail, will become a regular part of Bristol’s cultural calendar. The thought-provoking tours aim to give a more well-rounded insight into Bristol’s history and people by acknowledging the contribution those of African heritage have made to the city.

Both are child friendly, with child tickets sold at £5 and adults for £10 each. If you would like to pre-book at spot for the tours taking place on October 18,19,25 and 26 you can email //Kabbo directly on kabbohue@icloud.com.
