BM Trippin’ Tales: Trekkers, Gadaikallu has re-opened its doors

by · Bangalore Mirror

Visitors can now access Gadaikallu, a popular trekking destination known for its stunning views at an elevation of 1,788 feet above sea level. To reach the summit, trekkers must navigate over 2,800 steep steps. The Archaeological Survey of India has designated Gadaikallu as a protected monument, situated within the boundaries of the Kudremukh National Park in Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district.

After ascending two-thirds of the way, trekkers are rewarded with views of the Kamanu peak. Continuing on the path, they can see flowing water between rocks, remnants of a partially ruined arsenal, and a serene pond. This natural beauty has made Gadaikallu an appealing destination for tourists. Previously, public access to Gadaikallu was restricted since last summer due to safety concerns regarding landslides and rock falls during the monsoon season. With the recent reduction in rainfall and drier conditions, access has now been granted.

The current permission is expected to remain in effect until December, after which restrictions may be reinstated as a precaution against potential landslides. Trekking is allowed from 7 am to 2 pm, but overnight stays are not permitted. For further information, visitors can refer to the designated website (kudremukhnationalpark.in).

To reach Gadaikallu, one must take the route from Belthangady town, traveling one kilometre to Lailya and then five km towards Killuru, followed by a three km walk to the base. Bus services are available from the nearby town of Manjotti, and parking is provided for private vehicles near the fort. Detailed directions can also be found on Google Maps. Admission fees for Gadaikallu are set at Rs 50 for adults and Rs 25 for children.

Officials reminded visitors to respect the local wildlife and avoid disturbing any animals in the forested areas. It is essential to maintain cleanliness throughout the environment, ensuring that all waste is properly disposed of. Additionally, any unwanted or disruptive activities will face strict consequences. This area has a complete ban on plastic to protect the natural surroundings.
