- Warner Bros begins early development on a film based on George RR Martin's Westeros
- Original plans by showrunners included a film trilogy
- A new prequel series - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - is set for 2025
Warner Bros has quietly begun early-stage development on a feature film set within George RR Martin's expansive fantasy world, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Although the project is in its infancy, with no director, cast, or writer attached, sources suggest that the studio is interested in bringing the realm of Westeros to the big screen.
This potential development may indicate a strategic shift for Warner Bros regarding Martin’s Game of Thrones universe. Notably, original Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had envisioned concluding the series with a trilogy of films rather than a final TV season in 2019.
Martin had himself supported the concept. However, HBO firmly resisted the notion, opting to maintain Game of Thrones as an exclusive, prestige television property.
A further prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is also slated for 2025. With multiple projects reportedly in development, Warner Bros’s film ambitions for Westeros may signal a new chapter for Martin’s fantasy saga.
