Dan Da Dan review: Zany and hands-down one of the best supernatural anime

There are so many anime out there that will draw your attention in the first episode. However, very few can maintain the momentum and take that forward episode after episode. Although I have watched just three episodes of the new supernatural anime, Dan Da Dan, one thing can be safely said - this is hands-down one of the best anime that is zany, whacky and absolutely intriguing.

The story revolves around Momo, who gets dumped right in the first sequence and craves Ken Takakura, her ideal macho man. However, all she does is strike up a friendship with Okarun, an otaku (geek) who is obsessed with aliens and UFOs. They partake in a strange challenge, things get stranger (well, even on anime-level, it's very, very strange) and at the end of it all, Okarun is cursed by the spirit of evil granny, while Momo manages to awaken her chi.

The first episode was a hit. But, does the momentum continue in the rest of the episodes? The second and third episodes remain just as interesting as the pilot episode.

One of the best things about this anime is how the story takes you straight into the middle of affairs, without wasting time on backstory. So, will the backstories be missing? I have not read the manga, so this would come just from the perspective of a person who is following the anime, and it looks like the backstories will be brought up as the narrative progresses.

The animation is also top-notch. The first episode, after the weird encounter with the aliens, has some of the best animation of recent times. Not to mention, there's a lot of play with the colours and the outcome is simply mind-blowing.

The storyline is solid and interesting with a solid momentum is kept in all the three episodes. Not to forget the brilliant animation. There is not much to complain about Dan da Dan, except for the fact that one would have to wait to catch the rest of the episodes. Dan Da Dan has the potential to become the next big anime globally, and in India specifically, after Demon Slayer (fun fact - Natsuki Hanae is also the voice behind Okarun).
