In the Diwali special episode of the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 18, host Amitabh Bachchan shared an interesting anecdote about his film Agneepath. The film was a huge hit, with his character Vijay Dinanath Chauhan becoming iconic. The actor, speaking to guests Varun Dhawan and director duo Raj and DK, revealed that he had heavily modulated his voice for the character. However, it was rejected by the audience, and he was forced to dub it again in his normal voice within a day.
During the episode, actor Varun Dhawan, who will soon be seen in Citadel Honey Bunny, said, “The movie (Agneepath) is still incredible, and your character is iconic”, to which Raj and DK added, “You have been a hero for so many generations that even new actors try to capture your style in certain scenes. I tell them only you can truly embody that character.” When Varun Dhawan prodded about how he modulated his voice for Vijay's character, Big B shared the anecdote.
"I will tell you a fact–some things are unplanned," he said. Amitabh Bachchan then added, "On the first day of shooting, I still hadn’t figured out how to portray him. I was in the makeup room and called Mukul Anand and suggested giving Vijay a distinct, deep voice. He agreed, and that’s how we decided on it. There was a man who used to visit composers Kalyanji-Anandji’s home with a similar heavy tone, so I thought, why not model Vijay’s voice after him? Later, I found out that the man came from an underworld background, which fit the essence of Vijay’s character perfectly.”
However, the audience did not like it. "When the movie released, the producer called to say there was mayhem in theatres. Audiences were tearing up seats and telling the sound department, ‘This doesn’t sound like Amitabh; fix the sound system!’ So, to address it, I had to re-dub the whole film in my normal voice. But that initial voice was very impactful,” he revealed.
During the episode, he also narrated the entire monologue from Agneepath, surprising the audience and the special guests alike.
