Rugby Park will have a new name this week.

In a momentous celebration of dedication and achievement, Rugby Park has officially been renamed Bekhuis Park this week to honour Josh Bekhuis, who is set to play his 144th game for the SBS Bank Southland Stags this weekend, making him the most capped player in the team’s history.

The new name and sign, unveiled this morning above the Old Scoreboard, recognize not only Josh’s remarkable contributions to Southland rugby but also the unwavering support of his family throughout his journey.

Fans and community members can now visit Bekhuis Park to celebrate this significant milestone in local sports history.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Josh, his family, and Rugby Southland staff.

The heartfelt event showcased the community's appreciation for Josh’s commitment and passion on and off the field.

Bekhuis said it was a special day for him and his loved ones.

“It means a lot, especially for my family. Not being a common name in New Zealand [Bekhuis], my grandfather came over in the 50s, and I’ve always been proud to get it out there. To have the park named after me for the weekend is awesome!”

Rugby Southland Commercial and Marketing Manager Jack King was pleased with the achievement.

“Being here today to unveil Bekhuis Park is truly special. Josh’s dedication and passion for the game have made a lasting impact on our community, and this tribute is well-deserved. It's for him and his family.”

Rugby Southland chief executive Hua Tamariki agreed.

“It was an honour to be part of this celebration. Renaming Rugby Park to Bekhuis Park acknowledges not only Josh’s achievements but also the vital role his family and supporters play in a player’s journey. We hope this inspires future generations to strive for greatness, both on and off the field.”

The renaming of Rugby Park to Bekhuis Park will run for the next week.

Fans were encouraged to visit Bekhuis Park this Friday for the open captains run from 11.30am on Friday until 12.15pm or on game day, kicking off 4.35 on Saturday to witness the new sign as a reminder of the dedication, teamwork, and spirit that defines the Stags.
