Thirty arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour in Hamilton on Saturday night

Thirty people were arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour in Hamilton's CBD on Saturday night.

A police spokesperson said it was a "significantly" higher number of arrests compared to a normal Saturday night.

Three people were arrested for assault, 11 for disorderly behaviour, five for obstruction and four had warrants to arrest and were being looked for by police.

"It's disappointing that five people physically obstructed our staff while officers were in the process of arresting others," the spokesperson said.

There were several events being held in the CBD that night, being held at different venues, making it busy for police.

Officers were present in the CBD from 8pm, the spokesperson said, and extra officers had to be called in to support them due to the amount of disorder taking place.

Several senior police staff also checked 10 licensed venues to make sure they were complying with liquor licensing rules.

A total of 10 ban infringements were issued to members of the public for drinking in public.

"With daylight savings and warmer weather ahead, the city is only set to get busier," the spokesperson said.

"Be assured police will be present in future and will hold offenders to account to stop the antisocial behaviour when it arises".

Most of the people arrested were bailed to appear in court at a later date, but those with outstanding warrants would be in court on Monday.
