Horror footage shows Devon woman being punched in disgusting street attack

She was left with a fractured jaw and needed surgery

A young woman from Devon was attacked in a street while on holiday in Australia, where she was badly injured. The victim, Poppy, suffered a broken jaw after she was hit by a football fan during a night out.

Poppy, 20, and a friend had just left a bar when they passed three men on Swan Street in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond.

In a video of the incident released by police, one of the men can be seen waving a Brisbane Lions scarf, celebrating the football team's victory in the AFL preliminary final that day, reports The Mail.

As the man, and the two others with him, walk past Poppy and her friend, he dangles the scarf in Poppy's face. She turns, reaches for him and seems to throw a punch.

The man responds by punching Poppy in the head - causing her to stagger backward onto a shopfront and fall to the ground. Her friend pushes the man who is heard shouting: "She hit me".

Poppy quickly stood up following the attack, but had sustained a fractured jaw and broken tooth. Her injuries required surgery and she had titanium plates installed.

She had travelled to Australia to celebrate her 20th birthday on October 1, but spent that day nursing the injury which has limited her to pureed food until her jaw heals.

Poppy, who was only 19 at the time of the attack said it was "disgusting" and "vile". She said: "I don't understand how someone thinks that's an okay reaction to have, especially to a young girl.

"I have had stitches from my left ear to my cheek to my mouth. I had to have a wisdom tooth taken out. I have two titanium plates (in my jaw).

"I really hope he comes forward, or I really hope his friends push him to come forward. I think that's just the morally right thing to do."

Poppy shared that her parents back in England are concerned for her safety, and this incident has postponed a planned journey along Australia's east coast with her friends.

"I've had to put all of that on hold, and at the time, I didn't know if it was going to cost me anything either". she said. "[My parents] were really worried, and they were quite scared for me as well."

Earlier this week, police released CCTV footage of the incident and an appeal for the person to come forward was made. The individual was described as being between 20 and 30-years-old, roughly 5ft 8ins tall, with short, dark brown hair along with a beard and moustache.

In the video, he was seen wearing a cream jacket, white T-shirt and black jeans.

Victoria Police have since confirmed that a man made himself known to them on Wednesday. While an investigation into the incident is being carried out, no immediate charges were brought.
