Hocus Pocus of the highest order as Boulevard Newcastle's Halloween show is total witchcraft
by Simon Duke · ChronicleLiveIf you have left your Halloween plans for this weekend to the very last minute, may I make a suggestion/demand that you hop on your broomsticks and fly straight to Boulevard, as, just like every single year, there are some unmissable ghoulish goings on down on Churchill Street.
While Mariah Carey and Michael Buble might only get defrosted for Christmas, the Boulevard frolics can be relied onto spread some often, much needed cheer, all year round. Much like that song from (the vastly underrated!) Grease 2, Boulevard is a girl for all seasons, not just Halloween; but it’s at the witching hour that the long standing Trip Advisor favourite is at its vampish best, with an all thriller no filler night out that will have you cackling into your cauldron with delight.
When you go to Boulevard you know you’re going to get camp, you know you’re going to get costumes and you know you’re going to get entertainment of the highest order.
All three of those boxes are ticked to great aplomb in this year’s Halloween revue. With more treats than a plastic pumpkin full of pick n mix and tricks and high kicks a plenty, it’s no wonder Boulevard started its Halloween festivities back in September, as a show THIS good could not be restricted to just one week.
Everything you’d want from a Halloween spooktacular is present - Thriller, Ghostbusters and Addams Family, alongside some less mainstream devilish delights like the dark and demure Dangerous Game from Jekyll & Hyde and the all out jazz hands, dazzling and decadent tap dancing riot of Puttin’ on the Ritz from Young Frankenstein.
And, while, of course I Put A Spell on You is thrown into the monstrous mix, as the always amazing Danni Dee gives Bette Midler a run for her money as Winifred Sanderson, it is the icing on the cake of a full Hocus Pocus medley that does things by the boooook’ while also being quintessentially Boulevard.
Danni, also in spellbinding form as Elphaba from Wicked; her cast of fantastic Broadway Dancers and of course the mistress of all evil (although actually a lot nicer these days!) and sorceress of sarcasm, Miss Rory combine to make Boulevard’s 2024 Halloween show one of its most captivating concoctions so far.
Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble…of the best possible kind.
*The five remaining Halloween shows at Boulevard are on Thursday, Friday, two on Saturday and the last one on Sunday. And you can also now book for the not be missed Christmas Spectacular.
