Cleaning fans found 'amazing' way to make towels soft and fluffy without vinegar

One Mrs Hinch fan has claimed she has found a way to get her towels to be permanently soft - and it doesn't involve vinegar

White vinegar is often praised by cleaning enthusiasts as a solution for laundry and various other cleaning challenges.

Yet, some Mrs Hinch fans have been voicing their disappointment that it doesn't work very well when it comes to keeping towels soft and fluffy. In fact, some were concerned that their towels became stiff and scratchy shortly after washing.

Prompting one Mrs Hinch fan to seek advice on Facebook's Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks page, Sarah Bray asked "Keeping bath and hand towels soft. How do you keep them as good as new? Mine are like cardboard most of the time and vinegars not fixing it."

Comments mainly suggested Sarah should steer clear of fabric conditioner, with some proposing she use soda crystals instead, reports the Express.

Leonie Hurd advised: "Don't use fabric conditioner as that's what makes them less absorbent," while Mary Blatchford suggested, "I never use fabric conditioner as towels do not dry one as well."

Mary Robinson shared: "Mine are the same, I have stopped using fabric softener and use soda crystals."

Margaret Butcher offered further insights saying: "Don't use fabric softener! That coats to fibres and makes them unable to absorb water."

She added: "Soak your towels with some soda crystals and warm water and leave for at least 30 minutes before throwing in the washing machine. It makes the towels nice and soft."

Carmel Gardiner shared her secret to achieving permanently soft towels: "Once I stopped using fabric conditioner and switched to soda crystals instead regularly in the washing machine - my towels are now permanently so soft."

When asked about the amount of soda crystals she uses, Carmel replied: "I put a little soda crystals in all three compartments. It softens the water and is good to clean the machine too - 60 wash."

Hayley Yates also swears by using soda crystals to keep her towels soft: "I use soda crystals with my towels to keep them soft. I had a few towels that were going a bit crispy but doing this soon sorted it within the first wash."

To keep your towels soft, it's also important to give them a good shake after washing to separate the fibres. If the weather permits, line-drying your towels outside in the fresh air can help.

Alternatively, if you're drying them indoors, make sure to lay them flat over a drying rack or hang them out flat to increase the surface area for drying and allow them to dry quickly.
