Rubbish explodes in binman's face as empty gas bottle is crushed

Shocking video footage has emerged showing the moment a rubbish truck full of waste exploded in a binman's face after an empty gas bottle was crushed and blew up. 

The horrendous incident took place on August 16 this year and was shared again yesterday by Newham Council who begged residents to be more careful for the sake of their staff. 

The footage shows refuse worker Sean loading a bin into the compactor. Suddenly, a huge explosion devastates the back of the truck and Sean recoils in pain. 

When crushed by the lorry's compactor, the gas canister caused the bin and other debris to be fired out into the street. 

The binman was hospitalised with dizziness and hearing issues as a result of the blast and the rubbish truck was totalled.

Shockingly, it is not the only time this year binman have had to run for cover whilst on the job. 

In Barnet last week, two bin men narrowly avoided being injured when a lorry exploded as they emptied rubbish in to it. 

CCTV footage showed refuse workers going about their normal collection rounds in Barnet, north London. 

One worker was seen loading a bin in to the back of the lorry. He walks round the side after detaching a bin when seconds later there is a huge explosion. 

A big plume of smoke fills the screen in the jawdropping footage as debris and rubbish are sent flying through the air. 

As the smoke clears a wheelie bin can be seen lying discarded on the ground with rubbish scattered all over the road and the pavement.

The footage was released by Barnet Council who said the explosion was caused by a combustible item or items such as gas canisters or bottles, batteries or aerosol cans being wrongly placed into a residential bin.

Commenting on the Newham explosion, councillor Sarah Ruiz, Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children Services and Education, said: 'The recent explosion in one of our waste collection vehicles, which resulted in a member of our crew being rushed to the hospital with dizziness and hearing issues, is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by improperly disposed of dangerous items. 

'We are grateful that our staff member is now recovering, but this incident could have been much worse.

'We all need to be aware that items like vapes, electrical items, batteries, gas canisters and bottles do not belong in household waste or recycling bins. These items can cause fires, explosions, serious injuries, putting both our waste management teams and the wider community at risk.
