People call my £700k home 'diabolical' after I gave it a modern refurb

by · Mail Online

A defiant homeowner has hit back at internet trolls after they slammed her refurbished house as 'without character' and 'diabolical'.

The couple spent thousands of pounds extending and rendering the £700k 1930s semi-detached - bringing it into the twenty-first century.

But after posting before and after photographs of the transformation they were hit by a barrage of abuse - with some claiming the renovation should be 'illegal'.

Social media posts online have also attracted a lot of users to share their opinion on the refurbishment.

One critic's comment, which got a thousand likes, sneered: 'The one on the left has timeless character, the one on the right just needs some false eyelashes on it and Live Laugh Love on the wall.'

One user said: 'Left always wins for me. I live in a 1930s house similar and would never want to take its character away xx'

Another said the house had 'no character' after its refurb job.

Still another one said: 'I hate this rendering of perfectly good and characteristic British homes. There are Edwardian terraces rendered in grey and it looks diabolical.'

The couple, who have lived in the house for a decade, has hit back stating the critical social media post was just written to increase the creator's online profile.

The owner said: 'It is a house that was built in the mid 1930s, made from the cheapest possible bricks that people could find at the time. It was horrendous.

'When we bought it, the previous owners had had it for 20 years and done nothing to the house in those 20 years.

'We wanted a contemporary and modern look. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but it's our cup of tea and not everybody's gonna like it.'

The owner's partner added: 'It's an old post from about three years ago that has popped up and is doing the rounds again.

'My friends told me about it but it doesn't bother me.

'It is just someone trying to provoke a reaction to increase their social media profile.

'Since it was first posted we have renovated the garage too.

'We like the house but appreciate not everyone will.'

However, not all comments were negative towards the house work.

One said:  'Not everybody wants to be [in a] stuff old Edwardian. It's okay to be a modern human, you know.'

Neighbours have voiced their opinions about the refurbished house

When asked about what they thought about the house's transformation and how it impacts the area, neighbours said they were happy.

One said: 'The work has been done a few years now.

'I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The house is clean-looking. People would complain if the house was just left to rot and looked a mess.'

Another said: 'There are a few houses on the street being modernised.

'Anything that helps boost the area and keep house prices high is a good thing.'
