Queen Mary  looked elegant in a mint green ensemble as she joined her husband King Frederik and his aunt Princess Benedikte at the state opening of parliament.

The Danish queen, who shares four children with King Frederik, looked typically stylish in a coat dress and matching hat with a brooch.

Mary, 52, and Frederik, 56, sat apart, as per royal protocol, after greeting Benedikte, 80, outside the seat of the Danish parliament, Christiansborg in Copenhagen

Queen Mary's coat dress was belted at the waist and fell just below the knee.

The Australian-born royal wore her long brown hair in a bow-dry beneath her hat and carried a bouquet of pink flowers.

The three Danish royals were seated apart in the upper gallery, although Mary  and Frederik were seen leaning across the empty seat between them to talk.

Queen Mary chose a knee-length, mint green coat dress for the formal occasion while Princess Benedikte looked equally elegant in a cream, tweed suit. King Frederik, meanwhile, opted for a three-piece navy suit

King Frederik wore a three-piece navy suit complete with a pale blue shirt and a bronze tie.

His aunt, Princess Benedikte, looked equally smart in a cream, tweed skirt suit, which she paired with a sky-blue hat and matching scarf.

She wore a pair of diamond earrings and carried a quilted Chanel handbag.

Margarethe, 84, a distant cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, announced her abdication on New Years Eve, having reigned for 52 years - making her the second-longest reigning Danish monarch.

Recently hospitalised after suffering a fall, she is 'doing very well' - although she was not present at today's event.

Gathered for the opening of the Danish parliament, which takes place on the first Tuesday in October, the royals were joined by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who arrived with her husband Bo Tengberg, 59.

Mette Frederiksen, the youngest prime minister in Danish history, was dressed in a dark pink trouser suit while her husband looked smart in dark suit and tie.

With her hair brushed back, natural make-up and a wide smile, Prime Minister Frederiksen cut a stylish but approachable figure.

Last week,  Mary gave an informal update regarding her mother-in-law's health.

Before the National Conference for Health Visitors in Copenhagen on Monday, September 23, Queen Mary said: 'Under the circumstances, she is doing very well.

'I had the opportunity to visit her a few times since she came home. She's super cool and keeps her spirit high. Thank you for the question.'

On September 23, Queen Mary attended the National Conference for Health Visitors with The Mary Foundation, which was likely her first outing since Queen Margrethe was discharged form hospital.

It was assumed that all of Queen Margarethe's public engagements had been cancelled to allow her time to recover.

Frederik told reported that he had spoken to his mother and believed she was 'in good hands'.

He added: 'We take it day by day. The doctors are the ones who decide.'

The King was speaking as he arrived at the Danish capital's City Hall to attend celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir.

Queen Margrethe, a third cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth, is known for her chain-smoking and love of dachshunds.

Despite abdicating in her New Year's Eve speech at the end of last year, the former monarch continues to perform royal duties alongside her son and Queen Mary.
