Shoppers reveal their favourite Aldi product (and M&S won't be happy!)

Aldi shoppers in the UK have voted for their favourite product from the discount supermarket - with many dupes of household brands taking the top spots.

Whether he's lighting up kids' birthday parties or skydiving from 40,000 feet for charity, the German-born retailer's winning 'Cuthbert' cake always has a grin on his face.

Priced at £6.49, Cuthbert combines chocolate sponge and chocolate flavoured buttercream.

The bowtie-wearing edible insect is coated in milk chocolate and decorated with sweets.

Despite enduring a brief spell in the wilderness when he was removed from shelves in 2021 following a controversy, the Cuthbert celebration cake triumphed as the top 'fan favourite'.

Aldi, which opened its first UK store in Birmingham in 1990, asked customers to vote for the items which keep bringing them back week after week

Magnum Washing Up Liquid (left), 69p, scored 20 per cent of the votes in the Cleaning category while the top spot in Health & Beauty went to Hotel Collection Luxury Hand and Body Wash No.1 Lime, Basil & Mandarin (right), £1.99

In April 2021, Marks & Spencer took Aldi to court for copying its £9.50 'Colin the Caterpillar' design - but Cuthbert was soon back on display after the matter was settled through a confidential deal.

Aldi, which opened its first UK store in Birmingham in 1990, asked customers to vote for the items which keep bringing them back week after week.

More than 420,000 votes were cast in the Fan Favourite survey spanning the following ten categories: Social Media Star; Sweet Treats and Snacks; Lunch; Dinner; Fakeaway; Store Cupboard Essential; Top Tipple; Health & Beauty; Cleaning; and Best of British.

Scoring more than 30 per cent of the votes in the Social Media Star category, Cuthbert was the clear winner.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: 'There's never been anything like Cuthbert in Britain's supermarkets. Well, maybe there's been a few similarities elsewhere, but we're rightly proud of our iconic cake, and so it seems are our shoppers.'

The second most voted for product was Magnum Washing Up Liquid priced at 69p, which scored 20 per cent of the votes in the Cleaning category.

Each of the winning products will now be highlighted as a 'Fan Favourite' in Aldi stores, helping customers to quickly find their best buys.

In the Sweet Treats and Snacks category, Aldi's 77p Belmont Milk Chocolate Digestives scored the highest number of votes.

Aldi's Belmont product is often compared to McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives, which are considerably more expensive at £3.00.

The supermarket's Specially Selected New York Deli Pastrami & Emmental Cheese Sandwich, £2.69, was crowned winner of the Lunch category while Aldi's £1.79 Ready, Set Cook! Classic Fajita Dinner Kit came top of the Dinner category.

Fans' favourite 'fakeaway' was the £2.25 Carlos Loaded Pepperoni Stuffed Crust Pizza.

Bramwells Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce, 42p, were deemed Aldi's best store cupboard item by voters and the £6.29 Pierre Jaurant Sud De France Rosé won the Top Tipple category.

The top spot in Health & Beauty went to Hotel Collection Luxury Hand and Body Wash No.1 Lime, Basil & Mandarin, £1.99.

Finally, Aldi's £2.09 Nordpak Spreadable Slightly Salted was crowned winner in the Best of British category.

Reflecting on the Fan Favourites survey, Ms Ashfield added: 'It's been fantastic and fascinating to see what gets the seal of shopper approval across such a wide range of products.

'With our newly crowned winners set to be highlighted in store, we hope customers will find it easier than ever to find their favourite product.'
