Stephen Nolan left his BBC radio show early today to visit his mother after she 'took ill' following a fall overnight.

The Stephen Nolan Show on BBC Radio Ulster usually runs from 9am to 10.30am but was cut short by thirty minutes due to the family emergency.

Listeners were left confused when the presenter failed to return after the 10am news bulletin and was instead substituted by a longer edition of the Connor Phillips Show.

Taking to X later on, Nolan, 51, explained that he had left the studio after receiving a call about his beloved mother, Audrey.

'I got a phone call during the show to say my mum took ill this morning after falling overnight,' he wrote. 'I'm just letting you all know that's why I left early. Mum will always come first.'

She once appeared at an episode of Nolan's Christmas Cracker, with her son pranking her by serving her a vastly overcooked steak in a restaurant.

The mother and son also appeared on a documentary together: Stephen Nolan: Ulster-Scots, My Family and Me, which saw the presenter explore his family roots.

Fans have been leaving messages of support to Nolan and his mother after hearing the concerning news.

'Awe Stephen I hope she is ok. Right thing to do and she should be first. Take care,' one wrote.

SDLP Colin McGrath said: 'Best wishes to your mum Stephen, I got that same call last August. It immediately becomes your priority. Hope all is well, Audrey.'

Nolan said his mother Audrey had been 'taken ill' following a fall last night

Tanya Harrison tweeted: 'Thanks for letting us know - I was worried. Love to Audrey.'

Meanwhile, the broadcaster Narinder Kaur replied to his post with a heart emoji.

Earlier this year Nolan was forced to miss his radio programme following an accident at home.

Ringing in to explain his absence, he said: 'I was trying to move 10 boxes of tiles that were standing against the cupboard and I didn't realise how heavy tiles were so they all landed on my big toe.'
