According The Sun, the GB news host, 64, and Katie Alexander, 42, first exchanged messages on social media when they were both married to other people in 2012.
Katie's then partner joked at the time that he believed his wife was 'flirting' with Eamonn, but with both men sharing a love for Manchester United, quipped: 'Good job we're both Red.'
While other reports emerged that Ruth had been left 'devastated' when she discovered 'messages from another woman' on his laptop.
Now divorce lawyers are compiling information on specific dates and times surrounding her ex's new relationship, to figure out exactly how long it has been going on for.
Eamonn and Loose Women star announced their plans to divorce in June after 14 years of marriage and 27 years together.
Catherine Costley has been called up to represent Ruth, who is seeking a financial settlement.
Ms Costley is known for her fierce approach to divorce settlements and has said all women should have a 'go bag' fund when exiting a relationship, according to The Sun.
The divorce lawyer was once an apprentice of 'Steel Magnolia' Baroness Fiona Shackleton, Britain's highest-profile divorce lawyer who famously represented Charles in his split from Diana in 1996.

Speaking to the Mirror a source said: 'Ruth's legal team are compiling a forensically detailed account of Eamonn's relationship with Katie and when it started.
'Ruth's team are doing their due diligence ahead of the divorce proceedings. They are prepared to speak to people in Ruth and Eamonn's wider circle.'
The presenter and Katie went public with their relationship and in September embarked on a £15K Mediterranean cruise, with Katie sharing leggy snaps of their trip to social media.
Since the news leaked that maybe their relationship began before their marriages ended, both parties have been quick to reassure their ex-partners that this is false information.
'Katie and Eamonn have been scrambling around to tell their respective exes that they were not romantically involved way back then,' the source added.
Bar owner George Alexander split from Katie in 2022, after having been married for 12 years, they share a son and a daughter.
It comes after Ruth spoke candidly about heartbreak amid her divorce with Woman & Home in which she revealed heartbreak was her biggest fear, but not for her, instead fearing her son Jack, 22, would have his heart broken.

When asked what she 'wants most in life', Ruth confessed: 'Happiness. Happiness for my son, Jack.
'When you have children, you look at them starting out in life and just want everything to be good for them, for them to be happy and to not have their hearts broken. You can't guarantee any of that, but that's what I want most for Jack.'
Ruth shares Jack with Eamonn and she is also stepmother to his children Declan, 35, Rebecca, 32, and Niall, 30, from his first marriage to ex-wife Gabrielle.
They adopted the Border Collie in 2011 and are currently in the midst of a custody battle over the pooch - who is said to be like a 'second child' to them.
Both Ruth and Eamonn have been continuing to wear their wedding rings amid their split.
Katie and Eamonn made their first appearance as a couple at The Irish Post Awards, but the former GMB presenter requested that photographers not take pictures of them together at the bash.
A source told the publication: 'While Eamonn waited for the ceremony to begin, he enjoyed his dinner in the company of his new girlfriend Katie. The pair seemed relaxed and were inseparable.'
The event held at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London was also attended by presenter Laura Whitmore and Irish dancer Michael Flatley.
Eamonn proved he was very much enjoying his new romance after the pair jetted off for a luxury holiday together over the summer.

The getaway reportedly left Eamonn's estranged wife Ruth shocked, with the holiday occurring just four months after the former golden couple announced they were divorcing.
