Couple opening their own bakery in Bolsover after huge home-made success
by Louis Corbett · Derbyshire LiveAfter moving to Bolsover from Cornwall, Joe Barrett, 23, and Georgia Coakey-Campbell, 27, have set up their own business called The Baked Cake - and, through monthly market stalls and commission pieces, the pair have built up quite a reputation, leading them to open their first shop.
The pair first started off in April 2023 with The Baked Cake offering online deliveries of artisan cakes, with the business rapidly becoming more and more popular in the local community.
They then started their own stall at Bolsover's monthly market, and they quickly realised that they were popular after seeing regular customers dart straight over when the market opened, with all of the cakes coming from their own kitchen.
Joe Barrett said: "It's been a dream for years. We decided to have a go at it and see how it goes. We built it all up from our Facebook page then we got to meet all the locals from Bolsover at the markets. People love the brownies and the sausage rolls especially. Georgia does most of the baking, I do more of the business side of things and I help out where I can in the kitchen.
"We never really thought we would have a physical shop for a few more years. We didn't think it would happen quite so soon but the opportunity arose and we decided its the perfect stepping stone to start off with."
The couple are aiming to open their new store on November 29, 2024, after the refurbishment of their new shop unit is complete.
The new unit is going to be decorated as a traditional artisan bakery, with the aim of getting hot drinks set up in the near future. The new unit will be located in the Old Bolsover Yard, and the couple said they will be kicking things off with a big grand opening for their new store. They will also be offering gluten-free and vegan cakes for those with dietary requirements.
Furthermore they will also be offering the chance for customers to enter into a prize draw, with the winner getting a monthly delivery of their brownie boxes every month for a year.
Their new store will start off featuring various baked goods, as well as offering a online delivery service and the continuation of their commissions for events. However they have said that they will no longer be delivering cakes across the UK.
Joe added: "It's so nice to hear people's feedback on what people think of our food. It keeps us motivated to keep us growing the business. Every day has been a learning curve. I've never done a business management course so we are getting there bit by bit."
