Shoppers buying loaves of bread at Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons have been warned. Which?, a consumer group, has explained how convenience stores are costing shoppers more for their money - compared to much larger stores.

Which? has thrown the spotlight on the problem, which has been recorded across Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and Morrisons Daily stores. A medium white Hovis loaf cost 12 per cent more at both Sainsbury’s Local and Tesco Express, and 14 per cent more at Morrisons Daily.

Own-label chickpeas in water (400g) cost 104 per cent more at Morrisons, at £1 compared to 49p at bigger stores. Sainsbury's shoppers were spending 67 per cent more on own label butter beans in water, weighing 400g, at 80p too. The price in the bigger store is 48p.

The Which? study, which focused on 42 items across the supermarkets, went on to find Philadelphia Original soft cheese (165g) at Morrisons cost £1.58 in larger stores but £2.58 in convenience Daily shops. This marked a rise of 63 per cent, Which? said.

It study also found Mr Kipling Bakewell Slices (six-pack) in Tesco would set shoppers back £1.50 at larger stores compared to a £2.32 price point at Express supermarkets. This marked a rise of 54 per cent for Tesco shoppers and customers, Which? said.

Carling lager (four-pack) at Morrisons costs £4.50 for larger store shoppers but £6.49 at Daily stores - a 44 per cent hike. The Alpro Nutty Almond drink (1 litre) at Morrisons costs £1.67 and £2.35 at larger stores and convenience Daily supermarkets respectively, or a 41 per cent rise.

Jacob's Cheddars crackers (150g) at Morrisons cost £1.42 at larger stores or £2 at convenience shops, or a 41 per cnet rise. Haribo Giant Strawbs sweets (175g) at Morrisons cost £1.25 for larger store shoppers or £1.75 for convenience shoppers, a 40 per cent increase.

Own-label fusilli pasta (500g) at Sainsbury's cost 65p at larger stores and 85p at Local stores, a 31 per cent hike. Chicago Town Deep Dish pepperoni pizza (two-pack) at Sainsbury's cost £1.86 and £2.32 - a 24 per cent hike - at larger stores and convenience Local supermarkets respectively..

Weetabix cereal (24 biscuits) at Tesco cost £2.71 and £3.25 at larger and Express stores, or a 20 per cent rise, while Lurpak Spreadable butter (400g) from Tesco cost £3.33 at big supermarkets or £4 at Express supermarkets. This is also a 20 per cent hike.
