Disney+ has made a change to its service

Disney+ introduces new £60 a year charge to everyone sharing their password

It will check exactly where you are when you are using its service

Disney+ customers will now be charged up to £4.99 a month extra if they share their account with friends and family. The new charge is part of a major crackdown on password sharing.

Disney+ will now register the devices you use and your 'primary residence' to check where you are when you are using its service. This will be known as your 'household' account.

If you try to watch Disney+ away from home, you will be asked to verify your subscription using a one-time passcode. This will be sent to the email linked to your Disney+ account.

Anyone caught sharing their password with someone outside of their household will now be asked to buy a 'extra member' profile, Mirror reports. This will cost you an extra £3.99 a month if you have a 'Standard with Ads' plan or £4.99 a month if you have a 'Standard' or 'Premium' plans.

This comes to just under an extra £60 a year. The 'extra member' will only be able to stream on one device at a time and they cannot have had a Disney+ membership before.

You can cancel your Disney+ package penalty-free if you are unhappy with the changes. It comes after Disney+ introduced its cheaper advert package and hiked the price of other tiers last August.

Jan Koeppen, president of The Walt Disney Company EMEA, said: "The introduction of the ad-supported plan marks the next evolution for Disney+ in the UK, as we provide greater choice for our customers and our world-class advertising partners alike. Disney+ continues to set itself apart in today's streaming landscape, offering unrivalled value, genre-defining TV series and blockbuster movies set within a simple and seamless experience."

Netflix also increased its prices last October. The most expensive 'Premium' tier - which allows you to watch on four devices - has gone up by £2 to £17.99 per month.

Its 'Basic' plan has risen by £1 to £7.99 per month. The price of its 'Standard' plan remains at £10.99, while its 'Standard with Adverts' plan is also unchanged at £4.99 per month.

Amazon Prime Video - which is £5.99 a month - introduced adverts for UK subscribers in February. You can pay an extra £2.99 a month to not have the ads.

If you are a full Amazon Prime member, you currently pay £8.99 a month - or £95 for the year upfront. To get rid of adverts, your monthly bill will increase to £11.98 a month - or £130.88 for someone signed up for an annual subscription.

This is how much each Disney+ package currently costs:

  • Disney+ standard (with ads) - £4.99 a month
  • Disney+ standard (without ads) - £7.99 a month (or £79.90 annually)
  • Disney+ premium (without ads) - £10.99 a month (or £109.90 annually)
