Millions of Brits to get £300 automatic payment in time for Christmas - but only if you spot it

A code on your bank statement will let you know if you have been given the automatic payment, which will be issued to hundreds of thousands of people in the coming weeks

In the coming weeks, hundreds of thousands of bank accounts will be credited with automatic payments worth up to £300. Pensioners should keep an eye out for a specific code on their bank statements, indicating they have received this year's Winter Fuel Payment.

The payments typically arrive between November and Christmas and are automatic for those who qualify. However, unlike last year, not all pensioners will receive the cash.

Support has been withdrawn from approximately 10 million pensioners and is now means-tested. To qualify, older people must be claiming Pension Credit or other benefits.

The code to look out for in your bank account is your National Insurance number followed by 'DWP WFP'. This indicates that the Winter Fuel Payment has been received.

However, millions will not see the payment this year as they usually do. The new Labour Government's decision to means-test the support has sparked significant controversy, reports Birmingham Live.

Age UK has claimed that 2.5 million pensioners could struggle to heat their homes as a result. Those who don't claim Pension Credit but believe they might be eligible are encouraged to apply.

Thousands of pensioners have managed to claim extra cash after applying. They have until December 21 to apply for Pension Credit and receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

The Government continues to face pressure over the issue, following a non-binding vote by unions at this week's Labour party conference to overturn the decision. So far, Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have shown no signs of altering their stance on the matter.
