British Gas - £2,000

Customers qualify for grants worth up to £2,000. The British Gas Energy Trust is an independent charity, funded by British Gas. To access the help, you need to have energy debt of up to £2,000 and you must have previously received help from a money advice agency in the past three months.

The grants will go to people who are looking to clear an outstanding debt on their current energy account, but cannot get help from their own energy supplier. Suppliers that run their own support fund include: Boost, Eon, Eon Next, EDF, Scottish Power, Ovo, Octopus, SSE and Utilita.

EDF - £150 and more

EDF's Consumer Support Fund provides grants to support vulnerable customers struggling with energy debt. It says: "Our Customer Support Fund gives grants and support to vulnerable customers who are struggling with energy debt.

"It can help with electricity or gas bill debts, and provide essential white goods such as a fridge or cooker. But before you apply for funding, you need to get independent debt advice." Once you've had independent debt advice, you can apply to the Customer Support Fund on the Let's Talk website. To apply, you will need:

  • Your EDF account number (find it on your energy bills or EDF emails)
  • The current debt balance on all EDF accounts you have
  • Details of your household finances and vulnerability

The firm has also committed to the £150 Warm Home Discount scheme.

Octopus - £500

Octopus Energy customers can apply to its Octo Assist fund for support. The fund offers pensioners discretionary credit worth between £50 and £200 and also benefit checks to make sure customers are getting the payments they are entitled to.

The energy firm also supports customers with free electric blankets, thermal imaging cameras and advice on cutting energy bills and budgeting. The firm says electric blankets can help cut your bills by £300 - taking the total savings to £500.

E.ON - £150 and more

The E.ON Next Energy Fund helps eligible customers struggling to pay their bills with direct financial support, replacement of inefficient or broken appliances such as a cooker, fridge or washing machine and debt write-off. Through the Warm Home Discount scheme, E.ON Next customers can receive a one off payment of £150 as a credit on electricity bills for customers who are potentially struggling to pay their energy bills during the cold winter months.

OVO Energy - £271 and more

The package includes access to over a million pounds worth of free, energy saving products which help households stay warm and reduce their energy consumption. Items available include electric blankets and mattress toppers, LED bulbs and SMART sockets, and free boiler servicing.

OVO is also offering payment support and emergency top-up credit or temporary payment reductions to eligible customers. As well as this, OVO is paying £271 compensation to customers after failures in resolving complaints.
