British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON and Octopus customers can save £400 on bills thanks to a handy gadget. Consumer watchdog Which? has a number of tips to help those who are struggling as October 1 begins, with a new price cap of £1717.

Which? has today launched a free home energy planning service designed to arm UK households with the knowledge they need to cut energy costs, adopt clean technologies such as heat pumps and solar panels, and improve the efficiency of their home.

The tool shows C-rated mid-terraced house could potentially save a staggering '£447 per year' on energy bills while reducing emissions by an impressive 47%. They could also earn £262 per year from selling unused electricity back to the grid and even improve the EPC rating to an A.

Which is where our home energy planning service comes in. It will help you to explore your options with confidence and build a personalised plan, as well as make choices that work for your budget, find an installer you can trust and improve your home’s energy rating.

It can also help lower your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. One resident who used the service Tracey said: "Despite having studied related subjects, I find myself ploughing through the reams of information, and coming across things that are utterly contradictory. You end up feeling paralysed with indecision."

"It’s a great place to start," she said. "Easy to use – you can play around with it and change some of the parameters to see how that might affect what’s suggested." She went on: "I’ll be looking at heat pumps down the road. But when I look at what it’s going to cost me to run, for how I need to heat my house now, I think I’ll just put on a jumper."

A second, Jonathan, said: "I just wish I’d had this 18 months ago. I was willing to put in the legwork to do the research myself, but most people won’t be. This service shows you the options available for your home and points you towards the information you need."
