British Gas contacts customers and says 'absolutely free'

Energy giant issues message following rise in gas and electricity bills

by · Birmingham Live

British Gas has issued a message to customers after energy bills rose at the start of October. The typical household will now pay £149 a year more for gas and electricity.

But British Gas says there's a way customers can keep their bills below the Energy Price Cap, which determines the average rate. The energy giant is offering households the chance to fix their payments.

Experts have advised customers to consider fixed tariffs, with bills expected to remain high for at least the next six months. British Gas says customers can also switch to a cheaper fixed tariff for free if one becomes available.

Households are reminded to fully check any details of fixed tariffs before deciding if it is the right choice for them. Fixes can keep bills cheaper but if customers are locked in for too long they could lose out further down the line if average prices fall.

British Gas said: "Our fixed tariffs are cheaper than the price cap. Plus, with our fixed tariffs, you’re protected against future price rises.

"Even better - if we release a cheaper fixed tariff, you can switch to it. Absolutely free." They continued: "Compare our energy tariffs.

"Energy tariffs are the set rates you pay to us for gas, electricity, or both. They come in two basic types: fixed or variable.

"Which type of tariff best suits your home depends on: How much certainty you want over the price you pay; how often you want to switch supplier or change tariff."
