UK's most popular dog breed named - and it's not a cockapoo

Cocker spaniels are the UK's favourite dog breed, with 49,930 average monthly searches for the breed, according to new data. But which dog breeds make the top five?

We all know that dogs are man's best friend - and the data certainly backs this up, with Brits showing a real affection for their four-legged companions. Recent figures have shown that approximately 10.6 million dogs reside in homes across the UK, making us the second-highest dog-owning nation globally.

But with over 400 dog breeds recognised worldwide, which one holds the top spot in the UK? Open Study College has delved into search terms for the most popular dog breeds in the UK to reveal our favourite.

And while it's not a Cockapoo - it is not too far away. Cocker spaniels take the crown as the UK's favourite dog breed, with an average of 49,930 monthly searches.

In Birmingham alone, we search about them 2,900 times a month.

Known for their gentle temperament and lively yet affectionate behaviour, Cocker spaniels are generally good with children, making them the ideal family pet.

Golden retrievers come in at a close second, with an average of 46,880 monthly searches. Much like Cocker spaniels, Golden retrievers are typically gentle, patient and good with children.

Rottweilers rank as the UK's third favourite dog breed, with 46,420 monthly searches for the breed. They are very popular in Birmingham, with 3,600 a month.

When properly trained, rottweilers are known to be loyal, safe and well-behaved. Rottweilers are closely followed by the charming Dachshund - also known as the sausage dog - with over 40k monthly searches for this popular breed.

This delightful little breed is renowned for its loyalty and bravery, often being protective of their owners and cautious around strangers.

However, despite their cuteness, these dogs tend to be quite vocal and bark frequently - so if you're after a peaceful and quiet home, you might want to reconsider getting a sausage dog....

Next in line is the German shepherd, with just under 40,000 monthly online searches. Known for their loyalty and affection, German shepherds are generally considered a great choice for families due to their gentle nature with children.

However, like all dog breeds, it's important that German shepherds are supervised to ensure the safety and happiness of everyone involved, including your kids and the dog.
