HMRC issues state pensioners tax code warning after 'sudden change'

by · Birmingham Live

State pensioners have been urged to check their tax code on their slips - after a change. HMRC, which is now operating under the Labour Party government, has reacted to concerned state pensioners via its social media customer helplines this week.

A Twitter/X user said on social media this week: "@HMRCcustomers my husband was entitled to claim state pension in September this year but hasn’t claimed it. Could you please advise why his tax code has changed from 1383M to 931M. TIA."

HMRC asked: "Just for clarity, what is the tax code shown on the payslip please? Rob." The social media user replied: "His payslip for 31/10/24 is 1383M and the payslip for 7/11/24 has changed to 931M" HMRC asked: "Thanks for waiting, Did we send him a tax coding notice? Steve."

"No, it was just on his payslip. Thank you," the social media user said. HMRC replied: "OK, We don't have access to records here, so I can't check why the code has changed for you, He'll need to contact the helpline, unless you're down on his record with authority to speak on his behalf."

"I was several years ago when we had an overpayment but don’t know if that would still be valid. Do you have a number I can call please?," the Twitter user asked. You can ask HMRC’s digital assistant to find information about PAYE, tax codes, claiming a tax refund and proof of employment history.

If the digital assistant cannot help you, you can ask to transfer to an HMRC adviser if they’re available. This service is part of the personal tax account, and you can use it to check your tax code, the information HMRC holds about your employment and an estimate of how much tax you’ll pay.

HMRC explains: "Find out when you can expect to receive a reply from HMRC to a query or request you’ve made. If HMRC needs to contact you about anything confidential they’ll reply by phone or post."
