Tesco is making a change within stores

Tesco to make major change to hundreds of UK stores

The new move will impact shoppers across the UK

by · Birmingham Live

Tesco has confirmed it will be making a change within its stores across the UK. Bosses said customers will notice a change when they walk down its supermarket aisles.

Currently, Tesco's "Scan as you Shop" option is offered at more than 500 stores in Britain. It allows Clubcard members to scan items while they are shopping, using a handheld scanner.

You can even pack the items straight into bags and then pay at a Scan as you Shop till. Tesco has now said it is making a new move which will allow it to 'target' these customers.

It's in-store 'geo-targeting' means ads will be launched on the devices depending on where in the store a customer is, The Grocer reports. Lee Roberts, head of sales at Tesco Media & Insight Platform said: "This means you’re going to be able to target customers in proximity to an aisle, to a shelf, as they navigate their way around the store.

"I’m about to go into the frozen aisle and on my Scan as you Shop device I’m delivered a display message for a particular product, offer, or promotion that’s in that frozen aisle. And this can be replayed as you navigate your way around the rest of the store."

Almost 200 Tesco stores currently offer brands the chance to run ads on handsets. But Tesco claims this will be the first time a retailer has introduced location-based ads within stores.

It is not known how many stores will offer the new geo-targeting or when it will launch. Mr Roberts said the move was a 'huge step forward in terms of our location-targeting capabilities, and a massive step forward for our connected store offering'.
