Martin Lewis has issued an update to British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON and Octopus over "what energy tariff" they should switch to. The BBC Sounds podcast host spoke out on Twitter, now X, as the new Ofgem price cap - which has hit £1717 - kicks in.

ITV star Mr Lewis said on Twitter, now X: "Many asking me 'what energy tariff should I switch to?'. Just to say I'm currently writing my guide to that (inc fixes, trackers, EVs and time of use) for tomorrows MSE weekly email - I'll post a link to it here too."

The Money Saving Expert newsletter usually lands overnight and hits inboxes on Wednesday mornings. Mr Lewis said: "Plus that's the best time to compare as you'll be comparing to the new higher price so can see the real saving then (and the extra day won't impact tariff availability)." He went on and said: "As noted it makes no difference, its one day, and the tariffs are still around, plus tomorrow its easier to compare.

"You can of course do it today, but my weekly email goes out tomorrow (and I've already done many slots, explanations and appearances on this over the last few weeks)" Another fan wrote: "Appreciate you keeping us informed! Looking forward to the guide, it’s so important to make the right choice with prices rising. Will keep an eye out for the link."

"Fix switch to OTM has gone half AWOL: arranged on 16/09 to start 28/10 the gas part has been halted. They say my current provider raised an objection; my current provider denies this & after several odd suggestions (eg I was in debt) said it was taking time & wld start 03/10!!" wrote another.

"If its not on it don't matter. I now use a gas heater like I did in the 80s. The heating goes on 3x a day for half an hour each time. Just got my bottle gas for £36. With heating boost hear and there it's all good," another commented on social media.

"Slightly sceptical, I know you're trying to help us financially.... But ... after following your enthusiastic encouragement to pay NI gaps to secure a full state pension, the dear Ms Reeves at a stroke decided that particular exercise will render me ineligible for pension credits," another pointed out.
