Govt agrees new targets to deliver 303,000 homes by 2030

The Government party leaders have tonight agreed new housing targets up to the year 2030.

They aim to deliver 303,000 homes in the period from 2025 to 2030.

That would be an annual average of 50,500 homes which would build up to 60,000 in 2030.

It is understood the agreement has been welcomed by Taoiseach Simon Harris who had argued that the targets needed to be agreed before the general election.

Mr Harris consistently said this was necessary in order to have a serious policy debate on housing which was anchored by firm targets.

At tonight's meeting Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien got agreement to progress the National Planning Framework which will go to Cabinet tomorrow.

This, he said, would provide a pathway to delivering an annual average of 54,000 homes per year to 2040.
