by Ruby Flanagan · The MirrorAldi will be opening 11 new stores across the UK between now and Christmas.
The discount supermarket chain has confirmed that it will be opening two new stores this week, with four more set to open before the end of the month. The two stores opening this week are its branch in Sedgley in the West Midlands and Castle Douglas in Scotland.
Overall, Aldi plans to open six new stores this month and five in December, with new stores popping up in London, Bristol, Hampshire, and Greater Manchester. The exact dates for when the new stores will open have not yet been confirmed.
The new openings come after Aldi invested £ 800 million to "accelerate its expansion across Britain" in September and form part of its long-term target of 1,500 stores. It currently has around 1,000 stores in the UK. In addition, more than 15 stores will undergo refurbishments between now and Christmas to "enhance the customer experience" and introduce more "sustainable features".
Jonathan Neale, Real Estate Managing Director at Aldi UK, said: “At Aldi, we’re committed to making high-quality, affordable food accessible to everyone. Our new store openings are a testament to our ongoing investment in the UK, and we’re thrilled to bring Aldi’s unbeatable prices to even more communities ahead of the festive season.”
In its latest annual results until December 2023, the supermarket grew by £2.4billion - or 16% - to £17.9billion. Aldi says this is its “highest-ever period of sales growth”. The company said its pre-tax profit had increased to £536.7million up from £152.6million in 2022.
In September, the supermarket chain announced a list of "wish list" locations where it would like to open new stores. With its 1,500 aim, Aldi frequently does this in the hope of finding locations in these areas. Aldi says it is searching for freehold town-centre, edge-of-centre, and retail park sites suitable for property development.
The sites should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq foot store with around 100 parking spaces. Ideally, the location will be near a main road with good visibility and access. If you believe a site could fit Aldi's requirements for a store, you can email the retailer at: realestateacquisitions@aldi.co.uk. You can find the full list of 20 locations in its recent "wish list" in our article here.
