Energy bills are on the rise again, and if the hike in gas and electricity is proving to be a worry for you, it's time to start thinking about smart energy solutions that keep you warm but don't cost a fortune.

Enter, Monhouse Heated Throw Electric Blanket. The snuggly buy is a top seller on Amazon with nearly 5,000 reviews – around 80% of them being 4 or 5-star ratings – and today, you can get it for 33% less thanks to a pre-Amazon Big Deals Day sale. Usually £59.99 but on sale for £39.99 now, it's a great time to pick one up for less – and before the cold weather really sets in.

There are a few reasons why the throw is so popular, but an overwhelming number of people are sharing their delight in the review section at home much it costs to run; 4.08 pence per hour, making it incredibly energy efficient.

Other positive features of the Monhouse Heated Throw:

  • A large size of 150 cm x 200 cm
  • A luxe-feeling thick, grey fleece material
  • Features a 9-hour timer with an auto-off setting in case you fall asleep
  • A detachable remote control
  • It's machine washable at 40°C
  • It has an overheat protection system so you don't have to worry about it getting too hot or becoming a fire hazard
  • It has 9 adjustable heat settings
  • It features a 1.5m power cord, giving you enough distance from a plug

One happy (and toasty warm) Amazon shopper pens: "I'm not one who usually leaves reviews but this is too amazing not to speak about. It's a total fluff cocoon of extreme proportions, with the cold weather coming in I figured it'd be a great impulse buy and haven't been disappointed. It's quick to warm up and very soft to the touch, It arrived today so I can't speak about its durability but sitting here right now I'm not sure where the fluffy warmth ends and I begin. I wish it had a portable battery option so I could walk around all day in it."

A second adds: "I have had this blanket (plus two of the single-sized ones) for 12 months now. I love that this size is big enough for two although I use it for my office as it covers my chair as well as my whole body. The temperature control is good as you have 7 heat options plus a low and high option and you can have it set to be on from 1 to 9 hours. It's also washable and can go in the machine (not tumble dryer) which is brilliant."

"Very comfy, nice looking, good sized blanket. Love that there are 9 different temperature settings; the high heat is VERY toasty warm and heats up the bed quickly, while the lower settings are great for maintaining that warmth and keeping off the chill, keeping my feet and knees warm without making me so hot I wake up," pens a third. "The best thing is If I wrap the whole blanket around me while I’m at the computer I don’t need to put the heating on at all; the blanket pulls very little energy compared to my electric storage heaters or a radiant space heater.

However, that same reviewer also provided a slightly less positive angle to the Monhouse throw: "My only complaint is that although the blanket is 200x160cm, the heating elements stop short of the edges by almost a foot. I’d really like it if the heating part went closer to the edge so for example when it’s wrapped around my arms while I’m typing my wrists and hands could still be warm."

If you're shopping around for heated blanket options, Manchester Evening News reporter Rachel Pugh tried out Lakeland's Sherpa Heated Throw, £89.99, and claimed it left her "warm and toasty in seconds", and was more efficient than a heater or many electric blankets.

Rachel said in her review: "I was particularly thankful for the timer, as it means I can put the blanket on for bed safe in the knowledge that it'll turn itself off while I'm sleeping. It also means you won't overheat in your sleep and wake up a sweaty ball of fire.

"My favourite thing about the Lakeland Sherpa Electric Heated Throw is that it got me way warmer than my central heating ever could have. It trumps electric blankets because you can wrap it around yourself without feeling a load of wiring, plus the fleece lining keeps you extra warm - it's luxurious."
