Over time, towels can become drab and grey, making them look incredibly sad. No one wants to hang their dingy old towels in the bathroom as they become an eyesore, but it's wasteful to keep replacing them. Thankfully, people have shared how anyone can 'instantly whiten' their towels - and it will only cost them £1.

Soiled towels, when washed, may become clean, but the greyish tinge will linger even after repeated washing sessions. However, before you toss out the stained and discoloured towels, take note of the following easy-to-follow hack to whiten your soiled and dirty towels. Better yet, it won't break the bank.

A fan of online cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch took to a Facebook group to ask how people revive their white towels. He said he had tried a variety of whitening products, but none of them seemed to be working. Luckily, members said it's not that difficult to 'revive' white towels, you just need to know the product to use. Many of them claimed that using soda crystals would help to soften and brighten dull white towels.

Thankfully, a 2kg bag of soda crystals can be picked up from supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's for £2. Only half a bag of the product needs to be used at a time, meaning this tip works out to £1. If you've never come across them before, soda crystals are soluble natural laundry and cleaning products that don't contain any toxic chemicals or bleach. They have also been utilised for their cleaning abilities for a very long time. In addition to its ability to whiten things, soda crystals have the ability to turn rough, worn-out towels into ones that are smooth and fluffy.

To accomplish this, people need to add some soda crystals and the towels that need brightening to a bucket of warm water. After they've soaked for around 15 minutes, remove the towels and put them in the washing machine on a normal wash and the towels should be as good as new. Group members shared their advice on how they best use the product as well.

"Try adding soda crystals in the machine with your normal detergent. Mine came up so much brighter when I did this and the towels were very discoloured," one person recommended. "Always wash with soda crystals on every wash and all my whites are white. It's fantastic as it whitens them and makes them soft," said another. "Try washing in soda crystals and detergent. My towels are brilliant white now and it helps to clean the washing machine," another group member wrote. A fourth person added: "I add half the bag of soda crystals to the washing machine to whiten my towels, then just add in my detergent too. Comes up great."
