Woman's clever towel trick will dry your clothes in just two hours during winter months

This savvy cleaning tip will help you lower the running time of your costly tumble dryer and help minimise the risk of damp or mould appearing in your home this winter

In the summertime, whether you have outdoor space or not, the higher temperatures mean that our laundry dries relatively quickly. However, getting your clothes and laundry to dry in time for that big night out, or to put new sheets on your bed in the wintertime is no mean feat, especially for those of us who don't have much space at home.

It's one of the biggest headaches that comes with the days getting shorter and colder and it can also even increase the chance of damp and mould in your home. However, one woman has come to our rescue, with a tip that will both save on drying time and electricity bills.

In a video posted to Tiktok, content creator @refinedliving explains that you can reduce drying time by adding "a dry towel for the first 15 minutes" to your tumble dryer after which you can remove it and this will, she claims, speed up the drying process "by over 30%".

In the comments of the video a fellow user asks if the towel "is damp afterwards" to which the content creator explains that "yes, it absorbs a lot of the excess moisture." Another commenter notes on the video that the tip works for them, adding "I use this life hack on heavy items like terry robes and quilts" but that they choose to leave the towel in for the entire duration their tumble dryer is running.

In 2021, nearly a million homes in the UK had a problem with mould or damp, government data showed, and wet or damp clothes left to air dry can increase the chance of your home being impacted by this. Equally, tumble dryers can be expensive to run, as the cost of living crisis continues into another winter, being able to speed up your running time of the costly machine by using the dry towel trick will be welcome news to many people.

If you aren't lucky enough to own a tumble dryer, however, there are still things you can do to minimise the impact of your wet clothes on your home and speed up drying times. You can use a dehumidifier to minimise the effects of drying laundry - either electric or cheap disposable pots. Another expert tip is to add a bowl of rock salt to your windowsill while your laundry is drying, whilst making sure to keep your windows open too, because ventilation minimises the impact of the condensation drawn out of wet laundry, and the salt will help absorb some of the moisture from the air.
