I saved £500 on makeup and skincare with the Next luxury advent calendar that includes £94 item

These days we are spoilt for choice when it comes to beauty advent calendars so it can be hard to know which one to go for. If you haven't got your heart set on a particular brand, or you're looking to buy a Christmas advent calendar as a gift for someone but are unsure of their exact taste, the Luxury Beauty Advent Calendar from Next could be just the ticket.

Opting for a beauty advent calendar that features multiple brands means you truly get a surprise each day on the run-up to Christmas and while that does add an element of risk to your purchase, it can be part of the fun. Admittedly, with the likes of beauty calendars from Liberty, LookFantastic and Glossybox up for grabs, I was a little sceptical as to whether Next could live up to them. Well, if you want to indulge in treats from Benefit, Laura Mercier, MAC and more, I don't think you're going to be left disappointed.

The Next Luxury Beauty Advent Calendar retails for £170 making it one of the more expensive options, but as it is filled with products from bestselling brands worth more than £768 it's also one of the most cost-effective ones. Saving you over £598 on everything from fragrance to facial oil, shampoo and candles, I was impressed with the quality and variation of items behind each door.

This year's Next Luxury Beauty Advent Calendar is packaged in a large pink gift box, complete with a ribbon decoration and sparkles. Once the lid is lifted, you'll find 25 boxes designed to look like houses ready to be opened, in front of a starry night backdrop. The design isn't quite to my liking and I think it could look a little more luxurious considering the premium treats I was about to discover inside, however, that is just my personal taste.

The Next Luxury Beauty Advent Calendar covers all bases, including skincare, fragrance, makeup and body. By the end of December once all the doors are open, you'll have a fully stocked collection of beauty buys that should keep you going for a good couple of months. There are 17 full-size products and only nine travel which is an impressive ratio.

Arguably the star of the show is the OSKIA Super 16 Serum. Individually this item is worth a whopping £94 so receiving that alone means you've already got half your money's worth of the retail price. Add to that the £87 Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus Eye Cream and bingo, the Next Luxury Beauty Advent Calendar has just paid for itself marking the other 24 items as essentially free.

There were a lot of highlights for me in this advent calendar but if I were narrowing it down to just three I'd pick the Benefit Benetint, Emma Hardie Brilliance Facial Oil and the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Bark. I appreciated how the calendar was filled with both cult beauty classics that you may have already used but be in need of a top-up, as well as less well-known brands such as Manicurist.

I also liked that this beauty advent calendar gives you the opportunity to really pamper yourself this season. There are tons of bath and body items, including the Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Bath & Shower Oil, worth £55, and the Eve Lom Cleanser, worth £48.

While most of the products were seasonal, for example, the Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Shampoo is great for the colder months, as is the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion, I did feel that some items were a little misplaced. I'm a huge fan of Floral Street and Arizona Bloom, a combination of coconut, Madagascan black pepper and jasmine, which is one of my favourite scents. However, I tend to use this perfume in summer and would have preferred a travel-size fragrance with more wintery notes for an advent calendar.
