by Ruby Flanagan · The MirrorWetherspoon has issued an update on its closure plans as a number of pubs remain at risk.
The popular pub chain has confirmed that one of its sites, which was set for closure, will now remain open as a Wetherspoon. The pub's spokesperson has confirmed that Sir Daniel Arms in Swindon has recently been taken off the market.
The boozer on Fleet Street has been on and off the market for several years now, first being put up for sale in 2021 before being taken off later that year. However, it was once again put up for sale in September 2023.
According to Wetherspoon's website, the branch is named after Sir Daniel Gooch who proposed that the Great Western Railway Works should be built in Swindon. He then ran the works, which subsequently dominated Swindon for nearly 150 years.
However, other Spoons pubs are still on the market and at risk of closure. All these sites will remain trading as Wetherspoon sites until a sale has been officially completed, and they often continue for some time afterwards until the pub chain announces the plan for the site. Wetherspoons regularly reviews the branches it has up for sale and has often taken venues off the market to continue operating as part of the pub chain.

Published in October of this year, Wetherspoon's annual report said it had offloaded 27 of its pub branches, which helped it raise £ 8.9 million. The pub chain sold the freehold of premises it owned outright and returned others to their landlords. Wetherspoons has around 800 pubs across the UK, and even though a number of sites are at risk of closure, it also plans to open more branches. Pub boss Tim Martin has previously said he aimed to have 1,000 Wetherspoon sites in the UK.
The commercial retail estate firm CBRE Group and Savills manage some of the pubs' sales. According to the CBRE Group and Savills website, 13 Wetherspoon pubs are "under offer" - this means that a buyer has presented an offer that the seller is considering.
Although even though an offer has been made, it doesn't necessarily mean the deal is definitely going through. A further three are classed as "available" - this means they are up for sale so could be saved if a buyer is found. Below, we have listed the Wetherspoon sites listed on the website as of today:
