Customers purchasing loaves of bread from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons have been issued a warning that could help them save money when shopping locally.

The consumer group Which? has highlighted how convenience stores are charging shoppers more compared to their larger counterparts. The price hiking issue has been identified across Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and Morrisons Daily stores, reports Birmingham Live.

While it may feel more convenient to snap up essentials on the go, it could be costing shoppers more. For example, a medium white Hovis loaf was found to be 12 per cent more expensive at both Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Express, and 14 per cent pricier at Morrisons Daily.

Sainsbury's customers were found to be paying 67 per cent more for own-brand butter beans in water, weighing 400g, at 80p, while the price in the larger store is just 48p.

The study by Which? analysed 42 items across the supermarkets. It also discovered that Philadelphia Original soft cheese (165g) at Morrisons cost £1.58 in larger stores but £2.58 in smaller Daily shops, representing an increase of 63 per cent.

A four-pack of Carling lager at Morrisons is priced at £4.50 for those shopping at larger stores, but it rockets to £6.49 at Daily stores - a staggering 44 per cent increase. The Alpro Nutty Almond drink (1 litre) also sees a price hike from £1.67 at Morrisons to £2.35 at larger stores and convenience Daily supermarkets, marking a 41 per cent rise.

Jacob's Cheddars crackers (150g) are sold for £1.42 at larger Morrisons stores, but the price jumps to £2 at convenience shops, equating to a 41 per cent rise. Haribo Giant Strawbs sweets (175g) are another product that sees a significant price increase, costing £1.25 for larger store shoppers but £1.75 for convenience shoppers, a 40 per cent increase.
