Vulnerable individuals at risk as dog charity struggles with rising pet care costs

As pet owners struggle with the rising everyday costs, charities like Guide Dogs begin to feel the financial strain too

Three quarters of dog owners have reduced their household spending to manage the rising costs of pet ownership, and these financial pressures are also impacting charities dedicated to animal welfare.

Research among 2,000 dog owners revealed that more than half have been hit by unexpected vet bills, which typically amount to £679-a-year. As dog owners tighten their budgets, charities are also feeling the impact of rising costs.

A spokesperson for Guide Dogs discussed the increased financial challenges faced by charities that provide crucial services and care for dogs.

"We know it’s not always easy to cover the costs associated with looking after them," they remarked. "The cost rises add strain to charities like ours who provide vital, life-changing services."

The study shows that 69% of dog owners are concerned about the rising costs of dog ownership.

Many have resorted to buying cheaper pet food, grooming their dogs at home, or even skipping holidays to save on dog sitting expenses.

These measures, while necessary, sometimes prove insufficient. Some owners have had to take out loans or crowdfund to cover unexpected vet bills.

Guide Dogs, which commissioned the research as part of its 'Puppy Appeal', is experiencing parallel financial challenges.

The charity bears the major costs for their guide dogs throughout their lives, ensuring that financial barriers do not impact those who need the essential services. Yet, the rising costs of care are increasing pressure on their resources.

The charity is calling for public support to continue providing guide dogs to those who need them: "We urgently need additional support to our appeal,".

As 83% of respondents in the study sympathise with charities facing higher costs, there is a shared understanding of these challenges.

The Guide Dogs spokesperson emphasised, "Dog owners face price rises across many facets of pet care, and we share in these struggles."

"This October, we appeal to those who can to donate, supporting our mission to continue offering life-changing services."
