We tried all 9 of the Greggs Iceland range and were surprised at second place

Iceland has a range of Greggs products available in store and online, and we put them to the test to see how they compare to the real thing

You can find a Greggs almost anywhere now. However, there are times when you're hankering for a sausage roll and the Greggs ovens are off.

This led to the introduction of their Iceland range, allowing you to recreate the bakery experience at home. But does it measure up? Can you achieve that crispy, golden flaky pastry in your own oven?

I decided to put this to the test, enlisting my ever-eager family to help me sample all nine items from the Greggs Iceland range. We then ranked them from our least favourite to the best - with an unexpected contender clinching second place, reports the Liverpool Echo.

And if you're curious, yes, you can replicate the authentic Greggs experience at home, although you might need to bake it longer than the packet instructions suggest. I adhered strictly to the timing but felt some items could have done with a bit more time, flipping them over to achieve that crispy golden finish - though this could just be down to my oven.

Also, there's a lack of air fryer cooking instructions, but we did try out a sausage roll in our air fryer and it turned out perfectly. Here's how the products fared, ranked from least favourite to the best.

9. Greggs 2 Chicken Bakes 306g - £3 (4 for £10) - 4/10.

Coming in last was the classic chicken bake, which was a surprise as I recall enjoying this in my younger days. However, I also remember it being more flavourful.

It used to have a peppery kick, but this version seemed somewhat bland.

The pastry is delightful and crisp, but the chunks of chicken are somewhat tasteless and the sauce has a rather gloopy texture which I didn't particularly enjoy. However, for many, this is their default Greggs order, so perhaps it's just me.

8. Greggs 2 Cheese and Onion Bakes 288g - £3 (4 for £10) - 5/10.

Once again, we have superb pastry, something Greggs has truly mastered. But yet again, this was slightly bland and lacked a strong cheesy flavour.

It was predominantly onion and white sauce. But I understand this is the vegetarian option in the pasties and I believe with a dollop of ketchup (or salad cream - trust me) this could be easily improved.

7. Greggs 2 Bacon and Cheese Wraps 194g - £3 (4 for £10) - 5.5/10.

I've never tried these before and they seem like an excellent breakfast indulgence. You get the same fantastic pastry, but I think this might be a tad too salty.

My other concern was that the bacon doesn't become crispy, which isn't always appealing, however, maybe there's a way to cook it so it does, perhaps the air fryer can come to the rescue next time?

And as with the cheese and onion bake, a bit of red sauce would go brilliantly with this.

6. Greggs Limited Edition 2 Katsu Chicken Bakes 320g - £3 (4 for £10) - 6.5/10.

The katsu bakes have recently been added to the Iceland range and these smell wonderful, a noticeable contrast to the other more traditional fillings. Inside the bake, there are more chicken pieces than the chicken bake and the curry has a lovely warmth to it with some really nice fruity undertones.

This flavour is fantastic, but the pasty does seem drier than usual. Even though the textured, spiced crumb that has been added as a coating is delicious, it perhaps contributes to the drier feel of the bake.

But if you're after a kick of spice, this is perfect.

5. Greggs 2 Steak Bakes 280g - £3 (available 4 for £10) - 7/10.

Now this would be my go-to Greggs, so I'm surprised to see it mid-range. Don't get me wrong, it still has the great peppery, rich, silky gravy but when tasting them all, I felt the steak pieces were a bit chewy and the filling was very wet.

But if you're at home, you can get your knife and fork out so the filling shouldn't be an issue. Still a classic, but others are better in my opinion.

4. Greggs 2 Corned Beef Bakes 290g - £3 (4 for £10) - 8/10.

You can't get the corned beef bakes at my local Greggs as they are mainly sold in Wales. And I think it's time for them to be nationwide.

This was so comforting. The classic pastry, the added onion gives nostalgia for the corned beef hash you would have as a child and it would be amazing with a side of baked beans.

Definitely time to get them in Greggs across the UK, but remember if your local doesn't serve them, you can always go to Iceland.

3. Greggs Vegan Sausage Rolls 4 Pack 420g - £3 (4 for £10) - 8.5/10.

This is a fantastic product and one I've previously enjoyed by choice, despite being a meat-eater. It's just as good at home.

The delightful herby flavour and aroma make it scrumptious, and while the pastry is slightly drier and not as golden as the traditional Greggs pasty, it's wonderfully crisp and flaky.

Even my extremely picky four year old, who often struggles with food smells and textures, was won over by this (if you know, you know).

2. Greggs 2 Sausage and Bean Melts 308g - £2.00 was £3 - 9.5/10.

A surprise entry for me at number two, but the sausage and bean melt was superb. I never usually opt for this, but I'll definitely be purchasing it again.

The beans have been beautifully stewed - which, in my opinion, is the only way to serve beans - providing the filling with a rich texture.

The sweetness from the sauce pairs excellently with the generous pieces of sausage throughout. Combine this with the incredible Greggs pastry and it's hard to top, but it was outdone by the one and only....

1. Greggs 4 Sausage Rolls 427g - £3 (available 4 for £10) - 10000000/10.

Well, what can I say? Nothing beats a Greggs sausage roll. I was concerned it wouldn't cook as well as when you get it fresh from the shop, but I needn't have worried.

This is bakery perfection. And you get four for £3, who knew heaven could be so affordable?
