JD Sports announce opening details for huge new Stockport store

by · Manchester Evening News

A huge new JD Sports store in Stockport is to open its doors for the first time tomorrow (Thursday, October 3). The 13,000 square foot, "state-of-the-art" shop in the Merseyway centre will welcome its first customers when the doors are opened at 9am.

The new, larger outlet is situated in the former BHS unit at the shopping centre, which has been fully refurbished. It replaces the two existing JD stores, one in the undercover area of the Mersway, and the other facing the new store in the outdoor area.

They join Poundland in recently opening a large new store in the town centre. Stockroom, featuring a new library, cultural centre and cafe is due to be opened in the centre next year.

Council chiefs have described JD's new store, which they say bucks a national trend, is proof of the "positive momentum" in the town.

Colin MacAlister, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "It's fantastic to see the transformation of the old BHS building with the opening of JD and the recent opening of Poundland.

"This is a big step forward in our long-term plans for Merseyway, showing how we're rethinking the use of these spaces to bring new life into the town centre. With many department stores closing nationally, it's about more than just retail now – we're thinking outside the box to create places that inspire creativity and innovation.

"New spaces like the Merseyway Innovation Centre and the upcoming Stockroom are great examples of our town centre regeneration approach. These projects and upcoming events, such as Stockport Spectacular, bring the community together and make Stockport a place people want to visit, work, and live in.

"The fact that we're still attracting big-name retailers, even in challenging times, says a lot about the positive momentum here. Stockport has started to shine, and Merseyway is right at the heart of that."

It’s a well-loved brand in the town and we’re confident our visitors will be impressed by their brand new store which will offer a fantastic shopping experience.”
