UK Supermarket wins 'best tasting' Christmas range after beating Tesco and M&S

by · Manchester Evening News

With a mere ten weeks until Christmas, households across the nation are turning their focus to their festive feasts. Numerous supermarkets have unveiled a plethora of delicious delights and accompaniments to assist in creating the ideal Christmas meal. Despite a multitude of supermarkets launching their own Christmas ranges this year to simplify holiday meal preparation, only one has been declared the 'best tasting' UK supermarket by Good Housekeeping's annual Christmas Taste Test.

A dedicated team of culinary experts put each supermarket's offerings through a rigorous test, with 730 products from 98 brands evaluated in total to definitively determine which store had the best offerings for 2024. However, when all was said and done, there could only be one victor.

Budget-friendly chain Aldi triumphed over competitors such as Tesco, M&S and Waitrose, earning the title of the best tasting Christmas range of 2024.

The brand's Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne was a standout product, having been named Best Champagne by Good Housekeeping, making it the ideal beverage to kickstart the festive spirit. The £22 bottle outperformed its rivals in both taste and price, with pricier options such as Selfridges' £34.99 and M&S's £28 bottles unable to topple its sparkling supremacy, reports the Mirror.

A panel of judges were left impressed by the "soft, flaky pastry" and "sweet, caramelised fruit filling" of Aldi's mince pies, crowning them top of the leaderboard. Budget-friendly Aldi Specially Selected Mince Pies will set shoppers back merely 38p each, or £2.29 for a six-pack.

For those looking to crown their festive table with something special, Aldi's Specially Selected Roly Poly Whole Turkey was lauded as the Best Whole Turkey for its "natural sweet flavour" and "umami depth." It will be ready to be purchased from stores starting 19 December.

Aldi is also bringing back its crowd-pleaser, the Specially Selected Ultimate 5 Year Vintage Cheddar Bake too. It clinched the coveted spot for best vegetarian starter and can be bagged for just £5.99 from December 6.

No festive feast would be complete without the perfect pudding and Aldi's has that wrapped up as well. Its Specially Selected Orange and Maple Pudding, a snip at £9.99, was awarded top flavoured Christmas pudding for its rich sweetness.

Eager customers will have to mark November 1 on their calendars for when it arrives in stores.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, expressed her delight: "Christmas has come early with the Good Housekeeping Institute awards. From starters to desserts and even the bubbly we've got every course covered with awards, and we are delighted to be named Best Overall Grocer. Shoppers can count on Aldi to make Christmas amazing without breaking the bank."

Aldi isn't merely a festive season award winner, as the German-origin supermarket chain has been crowned the UK's cheapest supermarket by Which? for an impressive 11th month in succession.
