DWP offering financial support worth up to £4,375 this winter
by Kieran Isgin · Manchester Evening NewsThe Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging people to check if they are entitled to additional financial aid this winter. This could mean an annual extra support of around £4,375 for eligible households, so it's crucial for individuals to see if they fit the necessary criteria.
Speaking about the availability of various measures designed to assist low-income families during colder seasons, Minister for Pensions Emma Reynolds remarked: "As we head into the winter months, I want to ensure the most vulnerable in our society are getting the support they need, and that's why we have a range of measures targeted at helping low-income households."
The opening of the Cold Weather Payment scheme today signifies the potential for qualifying households to receive £25 to manage expenses during periods of freezing weather. In addition, those who qualify may also begin receiving the Warm Home Discount worth £150 towards energy bills shortly.
Pensioners haven't been forgotten either, with a prompt to review their eligibility for Pension Credit, which on average offers £3,900 annually and includes entitlement to the Winter Fuel Payment – potentially up to £300. Ms Reynolds noted the financial constraints facing the government, leading to difficult choices such as means-testing the Winter Fuel Payment to ensure it helps those most in need.
She elaborated: "With the dire state of the public finances, we have had to make some tough choices, including means-testing the Winter Fuel Payment so that it goes to those most in need", reports the Express.
Despite the hard decisions, she emphasised the government's commitment to promoting Pension Credit uptake, stating: "And while these choices were not made lightly, this Government is doing everything it can to ensure maximum take-up of Pension Credit."
Cold Weather Payments - £25
The Cold Weather Payment scheme entitles suitable homes to financial assistance when temperatures plunge below a specific threshold for a set span of time. DWP awards households £25 for every seven-day period where the average temperature in their area drops to zero degrees or below.
The £25 payments are made automatically to households receiving certain benefits including Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest.
The Warm Home Discount - £150
The Warm Home Discount provides a one-off £150 rebate on households' electricity bills. Eligible households can automatically receive this payment if they're receiving the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit, or are on a low income and have high energy costs.
Other qualifying benefits include the Savings Credit portion of Pension Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. Most qualifying households should expect to receive a letter from the DWP confirming their eligibility between November and January.
The payment is then made directly to the household's energy provider between November and March. Pension Credit, aimed at helping people over State Pension age (currently 66) and on a low income with daily living costs, could provide up to £3,900.
And it's important to note that people do not need to receive the State Pension to get this.
Pension Credit - £3,900
Pension Credit claimants may be eligible for additional payments known as 'Guarantee Credit', which tops up their income to a certain amount. Additional amounts are also available for those with severe disabilities. Full details on these extra payments, including those for carers, children and savings credit, can be found on the GOV. UK website.
Claiming Pension Credit also provides access to a variety of other benefits, freebies, and discounts, such as a free TV licence and council tax reduction. Additionally, claimants may qualify for Winter Fuel discount.
Winter Fuel Discount - up to £300
Eligible individuals can receive up to £300 to help cover heating costs during the winter months. To qualify for the payment in Winter 2024 to 2025, individuals must have been born before September 23, 1958, live in England or Wales, and be receiving one of the specified benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support.
People are also being encouraged to check if they can claim money or vouchers from their local council this winter through the Household Support Fund. The fund, now in its fourth year, is aimed at the most vulnerable households and is typically used to assist with the cost of essentials like groceries, toiletries, and energy bills.
Household Support Fund
The Government has bolstered the fund by an additional £421million, which is distributed to local authorities across England to assist those most in need. The fund will be available from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.
Councils in England are tasked with determining the best use of their allocation, drawing on local knowledge and directly engaging with community members. The amount each council receives is determined by the size and needs of its population.
For instance, Birmingham City Council previously used the fund to provide grants of up to £200 to help households with food and energy costs. In Plymouth, eligible residents could receive a maximum of £740 in vouchers.
Residents can discover how much their area was awarded at GOV. UK and can check their council's website or call their office to find out what support is available locally to them through the fund.
