Winter Fuel Payment: The £14 buy that keeps every room warm without the need for central heating

by · Manchester Evening News

We may still be getting the odd bit of sunshine, but the colder weather has definitely hit and most people have been reaching for the thermostat.

But one way I've managed to avoid using the central heating as much is with a new addition to each bedroom.

I've replaced our usual curtains with thermal ones and it's made a big difference to the temperature in each room.

Not only do they provide that extra layer of insultation, but the velvet charcoal ones I went for look lovely too, and they're actually very reasonably priced.

For the smaller kids' bedrooms, it cost just £14 a pair, while the set for our bedroom was £27. You can get them in a lighter silver colour too, or you can get them in a teddy material, in either cream or grey, for a similar price.

The curtains are from the Online Home Shop website, where products have received hundreds of five star reviews, with many praising the price and quality.

"Excellent product and value for money and excellent service and excellent quality thank you so much," said one.

"Excellent quality good with low prices. I have had several items and they are all very good quality," said another.

And a third added: "Very good, as described, so very cheap, I have always been so pleased with everything I have purchased."

One customer did say they 'don’t like the fact the customer has to pay to send things back', so it's worth double checking your measurements before you order.

It's not the first product we've tried from OHS which is helping to cut down the heating bill.

Its electric blankets like this one work a treat and the heated hoodies are brilliant for keeping warm and cost just pennies to run from a small powerbank that fits in the pocket.

As soon as it's plugged in you begin to feel the elements heating up inside it and there are heated pads all over this thing - on the shoulders, at the lower back and behind the front pocket.

There are three heat settings to choose from too. You just press the power button on the front pocket to change it from the lowest 'green' temperature, to medium 'blue' up to the highest 'red'.

When you have been wearing it a while - which I'm sure you will once the colder weather hits - you can easily stick the thing in your washing machine on a standard 30 degree wash. You just have to remember to remove the powerbank when you do.

There are other colours available in the shorter style, including charcoal, navy and black, all reduced to £20, and a grey one with a heart print design, priced £29. Standard UK delivery is £3.95.

Find the curtains and heated hoodies on the OHS website here. Thermal curtains are available from other retailers, including Amazon, where these charcoal velvet ones cost from £22.99 a pair, or these cream teddy thermal ones cost from £17.99.
