A90 delays expected for Glencarse Overbridge works

A contraflow system will be in place during the £840k project estimated to last until mid December

Work to fully repair the damaged A90 Glencarse Overbridge between Perth and Dundee, expected to take up to 10 weeks, will begin this Thursday, October 10.

The £840,000 project will reinstate the bridge’s load-carrying capacity and allow the road on the bridge to fully reopen to traffic.

Disruption on the main road between Perth and Dundee is expected during the works carried out by infrastructure company Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland. A contraflow system will be in place.

The bridge suffered significant structural damage when struck by a digger in March 2023, requiring an extensive programme of complex repairs to bring the bridge back into safe working order for road users.

Although it was possible to undertake temporary repairs while removing loose and damaged concrete, and subsequently fully reopen the A90 in November 2023, the primary deck element remained buckled.

For safety reasons single lane traffic lights remained in place on the bridge flyover leading to St Madoes.

Following an extensive procurement process, Amey has now secured the specialist resources required to carry out repairs that will allow these lights to be removed.

A spokesperson said: “The work will include installation of temporary propping to allow cutting out and replacement of the damaged section of steel beam, concrete repairs to the surrounding area of the bridge deck, and replacement of the damaged bearing which supports the beam.

“Amey will also take the opportunity to carry out additional maintenance work at this location while the traffic management is in place, including bearing replacement on the south support and repainting work, thus avoiding the need to close the A90 again for such maintenance in the near future.”

■Traffic Management: From 7.30pm on Thursday October 10 there will be a combination of lane two closures in both directions and a 50mph speed limit in different phases to set up the contraflow traffic management.

A full contraflow system is scheduled to be in place from 7.30pm on Saturday October 12, with a single lane in operation in each direction on the northbound carriageway between Kinfauns and Glendoick.

The A90 southbound off slip to St Madoes will be closed during the work. Southbound traffic will be diverted to the next A90 turnoff at Kinfauns where they will be able to return northbound on the A90 and exit at the northbound off slip.
