As winter's bite deepens, the sun’s fleeting presence becomes a distant memory, driving us to seek solace in the warm embrace of our homes. With October signalling the advent of the real cold, thoughts invariably turn to heating and how to ensure our abodes remain inviting without breaking the bank.

The instinct may be to draw the curtains tight against the encroaching chill, however, experts suggest this might not always be the wisest move.

Heating specialists recommend letting the daylight pour in during the hours when the sun graces the sky. According to them, as reported by the Express, it's best to harness any available sunlight to organically heat up our living spaces.

Windows can serve as a makeshift greenhouse, trapping even weak winter sun to amplify indoor warmth. But, as dusk falls and the natural light fades, drawing the curtains can keep out the frosty night air, adding an insulating layer against the cold glass.

Experts endorse this method, explaining: "When it is below freezing outside, it is generally better to keep the curtains open during the day to allow sunlight to enter the home and help warm the interior. Allowing the sunshine to come in can help offset some of the heat loss through the windows.", reports the Daily Record.

"Curtain retailer, The Mill Shop, has offered some advice on how to manage curtains with the changing light: "Closing the curtains would prevent that solar heat gain. However, it's also important to ensure the windows are well-insulated to minimise heat transfer through the glass.

The optimal approach depends on factors like the home's insulation, the amount of sunlight, and the severity of the cold temperatures outside. " They further advise: "Keep curtains open during sunny spells in the daytime to make the most of natural light and heat.

Close curtains when it's cold and dull, particularly at night, to reduce losing heat via windows and doors. Choose an insulating curtain for best results, or a lined curtain.

You could even line existing curtains to increase their insulating properties. ".
